YesAsia Editorial Description

Kwon Sang Woo and Kim Ha Neul, the popular stars of 2003's hit film My Tutor Friend reunite for writer/director Lee Han's 2005 romantic comedy, Almost Love! The two actors play Ji Hwan and Dal Rae, a pair of friends who grew up together in the same neighborhood and have been platonic pals ever since childhood. While Taekwondo student turned stuntman, Ji Hwan (Kwon Sang Woo) wishes to follow in the footsteps of his hero, action movie icon Jackie Chan, drama student Dal Rae (Kim Ha Neul) would like nothing more than to become an actress, although her eternal shyness during the audition process continually prevents her from landing any plum acting roles.

Although the two of them bicker incessantly, there's a mischievous, altogether playful quality to their arguments, and as the film develops, it becomes clear that they are great friends with a deep affection for one another. However, their friendship takes a turn for the worse when they each begin dating other people: Dal Rae starts seeing a handsome, athletic young man who happens to be a fellow member of Ji Hwan's Taekwondo group, while Ji Hwan himself begins going out with a gorgeous young woman with a figure to die for. It would seem that there shouldn't be any issue between these two about dating other people, but as soon as they embark on these new relationships, things start to get weird for these once good friends! It seems that everybody knows their relationship is so much more than friendship, except Ji Hwan and Dal Rae themselves! Will they figure out their own feelings in time, before it's too late?

Kwon Sang-woo and Kim Ha-neul, the charming stars of 2002's My Tutor Friend reunite in this rom-com as only Korea can produce. Kwon aspires to become the greatest martial arts star since Jackie Chan while Kim also harbours showbiz ambitions. It's a Korean genre-blending rom-com, and so it comes with romantic rivals and an inevitable tragedy that almost derails the happy ending you know is coming. Almost.

Professional Review of "Almost Love (DVD) (Give-Away Version) "

June 19, 2006

This professional review refers to Almost Love (DVD) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version)
At first glance, Korean rom-com Almost Love looks like a sure-fire winner. It reunites the stars of the hit My Tutor Friend, one of whom - Kwon Sang Woo - has gone on to become a massive star since then. The film is well shot and filled with loopy energy. A string of fantastical set pieces are grounded by charismatic performances by the enormously likable leads. And, most importantly in a film like this, the leads have an obvious chemistry and clearly love working together. So why does it feel like less than it should have been?

Kwon Sang Woo stars as Lee Ji Hwan, a young man driven by only one thing: to become the greatest martial arts movie star since Jackie Chan. He trains in tae kwon do. He's working his way up the ladder with a local stunt crew. He even has his hair in a classic 70's Chan bowl cut. Lee's closest friend since childhood is Jin Dal Rae - played with verve by Kim Ha Neul - an aspiring actress with a serious problem: she is horribly self-conscious and can't perform in front of people.

Lee and Jin have the sort of easy, natural rapport that comes from having known someone most of your life. Only with each other are they completely at ease, completely free to express themselves truly. It's a rare sort of friendship and the sort that blinds the two of them to what is glaringly apparent to everyone else - including Jin's boyfriend Young Hoon - that the two of them are in love and likely have been since childhood. The introduction of a boyfriend for Jin and a girlfriend for Lee brings some friction to the relationship, forcing them to evaluate why the other being with someone else bothers them so much. Just as things appear to be coming to their inevitable happy ending tragedy strikes.

Almost Love plays like a textbook example of the sort of crowd-pleasing genre mashing that has driven the Korean Wave. Gleefully silly slapstick nestles up to a firm sense of nostalgia, a heaped helping of melodrama, and some excellent comic action sequences clearly designed to show off Kwon's athleticism. It seems like everything should be perfect, but that clear design ends up being precisely the problem.

Here's the thing: Almost Love is very clearly a manufactured film, a film designed point by point to exploit the talents and chemistry of its stars. It's hard to fault the makers for this when the film's stars are so damn cute but, unfortunately, while going through all the bits that make girls swoon for Kwon while wanting to be Kim, they neglected to write much of a story. Not only is there very little narrative here, there's not even much of an attempt at it and as a result Almost Love feels less like a complete story than it does some conveniently chronological sketches. While there are plenty of fantastic moments, there is sadly little meat on the bones and when the final credits roll you can't help but feel that this was an opportunity missed.

The just released Korean DVD is typically strong. The transfer is quite good - though there are some occasional little glitches on the print - and anamorphic. The subtitles are inconsistent with some obvious grammatical problems but generally quite clear in meaning while also capturing the individuality of the characters. Packaging is excellent and the set includes a set of picture cards and a photo book. The second disc includes a host of special features, none of which are English subtitled.

Very entertaining Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Sweet -- that's the word for "Almost Love", one of the sweetest movies you'll ever see. Kim Ha Neul stars as Dal Rae, as aspiring actress who is terrified at performing before an audience. In between going to occasional failed auditions (during which she shakes like a leaf), she attends university with her hunky boyfriend, a Taekwondo student. Also on the school's Taekwondo team is Ji Hwan (Kwon Sang Woo), a part-time movie stuntman who has been Dal Rae's best buddy since they were little kids. Dal Rae tells us that Ji Hwan stopped maturing at age 10; he has an obsession with Jackie Chan is determined to become a martial arts movie superhero. However, when tragedy strikes, relationships must be reassessed, challenges must be faced, and goals must be adapted.

Much of this film's story is advanced through voice-over narration by the Dal Rae and Ji Hwan characters. This gives the movie a kind of fairy tale-ish feel that nicely suits its sweet heart. All three of the lead actors give intriguingly quirky performances and Kim Ha Neul and Kwon Sang Woo share a wonderful screen chemistry. "Almost Love" may be as light as gossamer, but I found it richly satisfying.

Actually quite good! Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Just like many other audiences, this movie looked attractive because I am totally in love with My Tutor Friend and longed to see KSW and KHN performed together again. However, high expectation always causes some problems. To some extent, I think this is in fact we audiences misleading ourselves by bias. Now I realized that it is much better to evaluate this movie on its own, without reference to My Tutor Friend which is a movie of a totally different kind.

I would first like to briefly mention that I had been seriously misled by the advertisement of this film in Hong Kong. Here this film was labeled “comedy”, which was totally wrong. I think those people who are here in the show business should really be more responsible and have respect to art works before they promote any of them.

The plot of this film is actually a sweet one. However, it could be better if the director had had paid more attention to the editing of the film. Many parts of the film, particularly many of the imaginations and some of the childhood memory parts are, in my opinion, not necessary. The film could be much better if those parts are eliminated and cut down to around 90 minutes.

KSW’s performance in this movie is again very good. Once again he proves that he can play well different character of very different personality. He is really a good actor. His appearance is OK to me and suits his role, though many audienance found it silly, especially his hairstyle.

KHN, on the other hand, lacked something in this movie. Though I still think she is a very good actress, I am a little bit disappointed. She could have given more liveliness to her role.

Gradually, I begin to like this movie more and more.

ok.. not great Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Despite all ravings about this movie, i was actually very disappointed. The love story wasn't captivating, the leads were not the ones i would've chosen, and kwon sang woo just had a horrible haircut that was ridiculous. i guess my taste is more of a growing love, rather than this story where old friends realize their love for each other. as a kwon sang woo fan i wouldn't even really recommend this, but for those who enjoyed my tutor friend, you may find this to be a good movie. 7/10

Almost Perfect But Not Quite Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Ji Hwan and Dal Rae have been friends since childhood. And as is natural for two people who have been friends that long, there's an unexplained closeness and comfortableness between the two. It's the kind of intimacy and coziness that blind them to the truth - that the two of them are in love and must have been since childhood, a truth that is obvious to others except to the people that matter: Ji Hwan and Dal Rae. Their light bickering, which is but normal for friends, suddenly turn into nasty arguments when both decide to date other people. This conflict in their relationship make them evaluate why each is bothered by the other seeing someone else.

A tragedy strikes and Ji Hwan loses his leg. Distressed by this unfortunate accident, he disappears from home and cuts all communication with everyone he left behind, including Dal Rae. After a year of soul searching, so to speak, he comes home, bearing a screenplay he wrote. This screenplay falls into the hands of Dal Rae. Will this revelation of Ji Hwan's feelings now cost him their friendship?

This movie reunites Kwon Sang Woo and Kim Ha Neul, stars of my favorite movie, My Tutor Friend. Expectations are high, therefore, that this movie will equal, if not surpass, the former. I was a bit disappointed, though. It's a beautiful story in itself, and I find no fault in the actors, but overall, the movie came out rather short in delivering the goods. There was probably too much, or maybe too little, of everything that I don't quite know what to make of it.

The dynamic slapstick blended well with the trips down memory lane but it gave way much too early to the melodrama, which, in my honest opinion, need not have been there. Or maybe it should have been.

I really don't know what to say with this movie except that I feel it should be perfect, but there's a flaw somewhere, somehow.

7 kimchi dishes out of 10.
