Created by Ross Bagdasarian Sr. in the late 1950s, Alvin and the Chipmunks first got their start as a fictional musical group named "David Seville and the Chipmunks". The band is comprised of group manager/father figure David, frisky adventurous Alvin, smart sensible Simon, and adorable pudgy Theodore, who are soon lured to Tinsletown for a series of animated cartoons and movies. Directed by Tim Hill (Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties) and penned by Jon Vitti (The Simpsons Movie), Alvin and the Chipmunks continues on the family legacy the late Bagdasarian Sr. left behind. The film transports the audience back to the Chipmunks' humble beginning, then trails them on their extraordinary journey to super stardom. Featuring computer-animated chipmunks and live actors including Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl) as David Seville, Alvin and the Chipmunks serves up a great plate of entertainment for young and older audiences alike.

Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are forced to move from the serene surroundings of the woodlands to the hustling and bustling city of Los Angeles after their tree is cut down. They find shelter at a small apartment where they meet David Seville, a struggling songwriter who initially gasps in horror at the sight of three rodents in his house. But the chipmunks are saved when David discovers their singing talents and takes them under his wings. Soon Alvin and his brothers are propelled to stardom as the new sensational musical band thanks to David's unrelenting faith in his little friends. But with a scheming record executive (David Cross, Curious George) constantly breathing down their necks, the Chipmunks discover that a life of glitz and glamour comes at a heavy prize.

As the story opens, we meet the three chipmunks, Alvin, Simon and Theodore, who watch as their home is chopped down by a Christmas tree company. With the boys still inside, the tree is shipped off to the lobby of the prestigious Jett Records, helmed by a slick and conniving record executive named Ian Hawk (David Cross), in downtown Los Angeles. Ian is a former college roommate of Dave Seville (Jason Lee), a down-on-his-luck musician and songwriter who has never given up hope for making a successful career out of his quirky musical sensibilities.
