海辺の小さな町で、工場長である夫と一人息子とともに大邸宅に住むアンヌ（ジャンヌ・モロー）。夫婦仲は冷えきり、幼い息子の世話だけが生きがいの彼女は、空虚な心を抱えて日々を過ごしていた。そんなある日、町で一人の男が愛する女性を絞殺するという事件が起きる。それを偶然目撃したアンヌは、事件の真相が気になって再び現場となったカフェに足を運ぶ。そこで彼女は、ショーヴァン（ジャン＝ピエール・ベルモンド）という若い工員の男と運命的な出会いを果たす。やがて、アンヌは彼を愛しはじめるが、ショーヴァンはその愛を拒み、突然彼女に別れを告げる…。
