Though he has only directed three films thus far, Koizumi Takashi is a respected name in Japanese cinema, known for his restrained character-driven dramas. As Kurosawa Akira's assistant director, he worked on such classics as Ran, Kagemusha, and Akira Kurosawa's Dreams before presenting his 1999 debut feature Ame Agaru, which was based on the late Kurosawa's last screenplay. Koizumi's second film, the acclaimed Amidado Dayori (a.k.a. Letter from the Mountain), continues with his quiet, lingering aesthetic. Based on a Nagi Keishi novel, the subtle, beautifully shot film revolves around a couple, played by Higuchi Kanakao and Terao Akira (Ame Agaru), who, in moving to the countryside, come to terms with their emotions and insecurities.

Renowned doctor Michiko (Higuchi Kanako) has been suffering from panic attacks, and her writer husband, Takao (Terao Akira), finds himself unable to write after winning a prestigious award. The couple decides to move from Tokyo to the farming village of Shinshu, leaving their stressful urban lives behind. There Michiko opens a medical practice, but comes across many villagers who are wary of medicine. As she tries to help. Helping the villagers becomes a healing process for herself as well.
