** Silent Version with Chinese / English Subtitles
"An Inn in Tokyo" is the final instalment of Ozu's "Kihachi Trilogy", and also one of his finest silent works. In many ways, it anticipates Vittorio de Sica's Italian neorealist classic "The Bicycle Thieves", as it focuses on the dignity of the individual and the vital details of the Depression in pre-war Japan. Kihachi is struggling with his two young sons as he tries his best to seek work. With the help of an old friend, Kihachi finally manages to find a job. However, in order to help the daughter of a single mother, he goes to steal from the rich. This demolishes all the hopes that he has for his life and the lives of his two young sons.

Classic silent melodrama
|
In "An Inn in Tokyo", a man with two sons, during the depths of the Great Depression, struggles to find a job so he can feed his family. He meets and falls in love with a pretty woman, who likewise is struggling to find a job so she can feed her little daughter. With the help of a friend, the man finds a job. Things finally are going well for him and he prepares to ask the woman to marry him, but she and her daughter disappear. He seeks to drown his sorrow in sake at a house of ill repute, when he finds the woman working there. He discovers that she has been forced to sell her body in order to make money so that her daughter may be hospitalized for dysentery. The man hates to see the woman in this unhappy position, so he does something to get money that will change the course of all of their lives. "An Inn in Tokyo" proves to be a well-executed, effective melodrama. It is amazing to see how elegantly a story may be told in silent films like this one; the lack of dialogue forces the filmmaker to keep the story simple. In the hands of a master like Ozu Yasujiro, the simplicity adds to the film's emotional power. While the film contains a continuity error and this print is of inconsistent image quality, I can recommend this film wholeheartedly. |
