YesAsia Editorial Description
An urban love triangle is blown up to fantastical proportions in Anna Magdalena, the directorial debut of respected Hong Kong art director/costume designer Yee Chung Man (A Chinese Ghost Story). Written by Ivy Ho (Comrades, Almost a Love Story), the romantic comedy stars three of Hong Kong's most beautiful young stars - Aaron Kwok, Kelly Chen, and Takeshi Kaneshiro - in a charming urban romance that makes up the first half of the film. However, Anna Magdalena then takes a sudden shift into a grand, surreal fantasy about two thieves (also Kelly Chen and Takeshi Kaneshiro) inventing a new kind of messenger service in a futuristic world. The consistently inventive film also features cameos by Anita Yuen, Leslie Cheung, Eric Tsang, and Jacky Cheung.
Kar Fu (Takeshi Kaneshiro) is a lonely piano tuner who becomes friends with charismatic wanderer Muk Yan (Aaron Kwok). One day, the beautiful Man Yee (Kelly Chen) moves in upstairs. While it's love at first sight for Fu, Man Yee instead develops a love-and-hate relationship with Muk Yan, forming a romantic triangle among the three. The timid Fu realizes he can't compete with Muk Yan for Man Yee's affections, so he instead realizes his love for her in a fantasy story called XO Couple.

Takeshi or Not Takeshi? that is the question!
Takeshi or Not Takeshi? that is the question!

Ah, the thought of Aaron Kwok and Takeshi Kaneshiro in one film should give me goose bumps, but why doesn't it? I love both actors, but no bumps! Aaron was at his naughty best, and so cute too, what a heart breaker! Takeshi was too nerdy looking which I know was the whole point of the thing, but for one moment he was cool!...but was over too soon! Anyway, back to the actual story! Takeshi, a piano tuner accidently ends up with a lodger after he goes to tune a womans piano just as Aaron is breaking up with her! Takeshi and Aaron end up on the same bus and Aaron tells him he is a writer....to be truthful Aaron is a good liar! Anyway, he ends up worming his way into staying with Takeshi, when a new neighbour moves in upstairs, Kelly Chen. As she practices on her piano, she drives Aaron NUTS! I must admit that the funniest stuff happen when Aaron is on screen. Unfortunately, she falls for Aaron and Takeshi can only dream....and he does quite literally and it ends up as a book! This is when we Takeshi looking cool, as a copy writer reads his novel and through her telling of the story to her boss, we see how Takeshi shows his love for Kelly as the whole purpose of the novel is in the hopes that oneday everyone will find their X or 0. It's a very sweet film and it's as though it is two separate films one Aarons and the other Takeshi's, but very enjoyable. If you have'nt seen Lavender with Kelly Chen and Takeshi Kaneshiro you should look out for this one too as it's funny and soppy! Oh and Aaron in Para Para Sakura is brilliant too! |

A lovely and unusual love story.

While this film was not what I expected, it didn't fail to impress me, and was actually far better than I thought it'd be. For me it was a breath for fresh air compared to other saccharine coated romantic movies with the usual stereotypical characters. I agree with the earlier comment that mature audiences are more likely to realise the poignancy of the message conveyed. The movie is also very well cast. Aaron Kwok is adept at playing the unambitious, womanising but unavoidably attractive free spirit; Kaneshiro Takeshi conveys his smart, shy and sensitive character superbly; and Kelly Chen is more than convincing as the modern sassy girl who has had her heart broken too many times. Furthermore, the cameos are a gem! An charming and enchanting tale for those with a romantic soul. |

good movie, watch it
good movie, watch it

Let me start off by saying the cast did a good job acting in this highly imaginative movie. The movie itself, if you are interested in romance movies, is highly acceptable and believeable. The nature of each of its characters, from major to minor, are truly vivid, and it is easy to imagine oneself in their positions. Hence, the characters in this movie were very interesting. There are some random parts in this movie;however, which explains the minus two points. It kinda draws away from the main story line and the main characters themselves for awhile. Overall though, it's good and definetly worth a watch. Plus Kelly Chen is a good actress! lol |

Sure, to many people Aaron Kwok and Takeshi Kaneshiro are really good looking and Kelly Chen is really beutiful and that is why many people would like to watch this film. But don't let this all star cast fool you because when I watched the film, it nearly put me to sleep because it was so boring. |
