September 12, 2010 IMO the worst Yik Shu novel i've ever read!
I've been a fan of hers since ages and have almost read all of her published books. This is the 1st one I can't finish and had to throw it down in disugust. Her recent novels already have this trend - all physical attraction (lust) and very little true love (and what's is with all the obsession with hairy men?). This is the worst of the bunch as it's almost like watching a porno movie, pretty much all action and no plot. I actually enjoy her followup collection of proses (vol. 273) and I'm glad I bought the latter one before it went out of print or I'd would really have thought she'd totally lost her magic.

Yi Shu Xi Lie146 - Zong Heng Si Hai ( Chang Pian Xiao Shuo )
May 4, 2009 One of my favorites! This is one of my favorite, if not the favorite, Yik Shu novels of all time. Even though it's not a love story, it's remarkable how she's able to weave historical events with fictional ones (just like how Jin Yong did in his wuxia novels) to come up w/ a great feel-good story. I'd read this anytime I feel depressed and need a a pick-me-up.

Yi Shu Xi Lie263 - Si Bu Qu ( Xiao Shuo)
May 4, 2009 Not BadIt's been a while since I've read this book, but I do like it so would like to put in a good word to balance out the rating. I've bought and read over 200+ of her novels/short-stories/proses (still trying to collect the remaining out of print ones), and have been a fan from the beginning. It's natural for her style to change as she grows older; in fact except for her really early works her novels have always been about love/passion tempered w/ a sense of realism. If you want unabashed and flaming passion then you're not really a true fan and should look somewhere else.

May 4, 2009 Back in form but nothing spectacular...Since I berated her last novel, I felt obligated to at least put in a few good words on her latest. Romance w/ a sci-fi spin is nothing new in her repertoire, but at least she's back in form w/ her trade mark wit and humor. Equally risque if not more so than her previous novel, seems like she's out to prove a point to her legion of fans that she indeed wrote the last novel and the sudden change in style is not fortuitous. There're a lot of depiction of promiscuity which in itself is fine, but what turned me off is the excessive and over the top preachy tone that sex and nudity is natural and no one should feel ashamed. This reminded me of what she wrote in her novel # 238 pg. 200, that this is the psyche of an old bachelorette and exactly how one would behave.
She's one of my favorite authors and I have the utmost repect for her (both her literary skill and as a person), so I sincerely hope that I'm just reading too much into this and she's still living a happy married life.

Yik Shu Series 264 - De Fen Jun Nai You (Novel)
(4)Our Price: US$13.49Usually ships within 7 - 14 daysMarch 6, 2009 Very disappointing compared to her last 3 novelsDefinitely not one of her better ones (if indeed she wrote it as I have my doubts, being a long time fan of her novels). First her trademark wit and humor are nowhere to be found, and the main characters don't elicit any empathy at all, which almost never happens in her novels (no matter how flawed the main characters are). Then there's the wishy-washy ending which seemed to have been written by a high school student, very uncharacteristic of the author. Finally this is probably the most risque novel under her name; I'm not a prude but some passages seem to be so out of place; again very atypical of the author's style. First time in quite a while that I felt money/time wasted; her last 3 novels are masterpieces by comparison... :-(

Black Mask (DTS Version)
January 29, 2009 Don't get the dubbed (Artisan) version!Granted this is not a good film by any stratch of imagination, but some parts of it are still enjoyable (in a guilty pleasure way). This version is cut to avoid a CAT III rating (because of the gore) so parts of it don't make sense; still I enjoy it because 1). the action (some people complained about the editing but as a trained martial artist some of the action is actually pretty cool) 2). it's stylish 3). Francoise Yip is hot 4). Lau Ching Wan and Karen Mok are great. If you watched the dubbed (Artisan version) and have some spare change, at least rent it and see the difference.

The music composer for the drama rearranged it as a piano solo w/ violin (or strings) accompanyment and the resulting theme is just gorgeous and haunting. As for her singing, I can't believe people says her voice is beautiful and that she can actually sing. Takuechi Mariya, Imai Miki, now those are artists who have gorgeous voices PLUS they can actually sing.

May 11, 2007 To set the record straight...
Inu Yasha is published in Shonen Sunday, a weekly publication of Shokakukan. Jump is another weekly publication by Shueisha. I do agree with the previous poster that there's really no point in continuing with the story. I know Rumiko Takahashi has a lot of clout because of her previous hit mangas, but if she continues dragging this on she'll be using up a lot of good will and her clout will be drastically diminished with the publisher. It's just so sad that one of my favorite mangakas has degenerated to such a pitiful level.

April 22, 2007 Touche!
I agree with the previous comment. Even Detective Conan (whose anime still have decent TV ratings in Japan) is coming to an end. However, for Inu Yasha (currently up to ep. 502, and the anime has long been cancelled), the end is still no where in sight.

(1)Our Price: US$10.99Usually ships within 1 to 2 daysApril 17, 2007 Pleasantly surprisedI don't like WJ movies; they are usually tasteless and vulgar. However, this movie is surprisingly clean and devoid of his usual vile, even though the theme is still 'new bottle, old wine'. The movie is catered primarily towards Cantonese speaking audience (actually Hong Kong, as it's full of local slangs and references), so people who don't understand the language may not be able to appreciate a lot of the jokes. BTW, does anybody know the name of the female artist and song that was played near the end?

March 30, 2007 Another piece of trash from WJIf you've read the novels, don't expect a faithful or even decent adaptation. If you're familiar w/ the producer's work, do expect the usual sappy melodrama, cheap thrills, and illogical plots. Most of the main characters are miscast; Athena's character should have been played by Gillian whereas in the novel, Gillian's character is just a ordinary looking, diminutive girl that can be played by just about anyone. If you're in North America, save your money and wait for it to be broadcasted on Chinese TV channels, which is currently airing another bad Jin Yong remake (Return of the Condor Heroes 06).

March 20, 2007 Charming and funny mysteries
The series QED by the same author has been in a bit of a funk lately and I now know why. All the charm and humor has been transferred into this new series. The main male character has a boyish charm that the counterpart in QED doesn't have, and the main female character also has more spunkiness. The mysteries still retain the author's trademark science orientation sans the math, and is a bit more down to earth. Highly recommended!

(4)Our Price: US$10.99Usually ships within 7 - 14 daysMarch 8, 2007 Another poor novel adaptationI've never seen a 'big' budget disaster movie that's so devoid of suspense and tension. 'The day after tomorrow' may not be a good movie, but at least it's interesting up until the 's*** hits the fan'. Here the pacing is so slow, the subplots so cliche'd, and the dialog so preachy that I don't really care what happened at the end. The special effects are decent but nothing special; I would recommend reading the manga adaptation instead.

March 7, 2007 Manga version's much better! The story is being dumbed down way too much and the new material that's introduced simply doesn't match the wit and intellegence of the manga. The male lead is terribly mis-casted; although L and the female KIRA are OK. CG is nothing to write home about but understandable given the budget (compared to those of Hollywood movies). Bottom line, don't expect a faithful adaptation of the manga; if you haven't read it, it may make for passable entertainment.

Rikouran (Japan Version)
March 2, 2007 Just to be fair...The previous comment is not a fair assessment of this product, as the reviewer hasn't even seen the TV series. I have. There's actually a fair amount of mandarin spoken in the 2 part TV series, especially in the 2nd part. Whether you can make out what Ueta Aya says in Mandarin is different story, of course, but Mandarin is not an easy language for foreigners. Her pronounciation is extremely good though for the songs she sings in Mandarin (save for a few words), and I just wish she would spend the same amount of effort with the dialog (I've read somewhere that she deliberately concentrate on making the singing part sounds genuine). As this is oriented towards the Japanese market, I can understand the emphasis and so couldn't really fault her for this.

The Legend Of The Condor Heroes (1994) (VCD) (Vol.2 of 2) (TVB Drama)
January 10, 2007 Best adaption of the novel! This is SO much better than the 83 series (and the 2003 version). This drama is more faithful to the novel (actually the most faithful of all adaptations), the 2 lead characters WAY better (Barbara Yung as Wong Rung imho is a travesty). I just hope they release a DVD version, together with the 95 version of Return of the Condor Heroes.

January 8, 2007 Why change the dialog?I've already commented on this, but I've something to add so I'll give it a 7 just to maintain the current score. Anyone who has read any one of Jin Yong's novel would notice that he has a unique writing style. The dialogs are always succinct, witty, lively, and not 'cliched' except when intended. They added a lot of extraneous dialogs, changed/deleted others that it completey changed the mood and atmosphere of a lot of scenes. Some scenes became so slow and dragged as to become farcical, ridiculous and totally unwatchable. Most of the witty dialogs are gone and replaced by some brain-dead sh**** ones. There's no Cantonese dialog/slangs in the novels so I'm baffled about the change. This travesty is where I find it most inexcusable, and is something that the Hong Kong versions do not have (for the most part).

November 13, 2006 This remake just s****!!!This is my favorite Jin Yong novel and I've read it so many times that I can recite some of the parts. The only good thing about this remake is the scenery; the male lead is horrendous; some of the fight scenes way over the top; and the mutilated story being the most unexcusable. I tend to go ballistic when the story is unnecessarily altered; hey if the writer thinks s/he's better than Jin Yong then s/he wouldn't be writing screenplays now, would they. The Luis Koo version is the most faithful to the novel (the only bad part being he and some other actors/actresses have to act younger than their age in the beginning); he and Carmen Lee imho have the best portrayal of the 2 main characters in the novel. I would rate Andy Lau's version a close 2nd; any other versions I've seen is not worth mentioning.

Quan Ye Cha (Vol.46)
October 19, 2006 PLEASE end it already!C'mon, how many more demons and ghosts do they have to fight to get to the final confrontation? It has gotten to the point where I don't care how the story ends, just end it! This is a classic example of milking something to the point of being detrimental to the series. There're no more movies, OVAs, and even the anime series has ended in Japan long time ago because of poor ratings. I'm still buying it only because I want to complete the whole set; but even that I'm not so sure now. What is the author thinking???

Lord (Vol.1)
April 27, 2006 Good, but...(***SPOILERS***)OK, I can accept a Japanese as 'Liu Bei' (since I never like the character anyway), but there's another character twist in an upcoming volumn that I think will be much more contraversial. That being said, the drawing is breathtaking. Just hope the author won't change the story too drastically down the road.
