Charlene Choi is trying very hard to be mature and sophisticated, no doubt to create a new image in the wake of Twins`partner Gillian Chung`s scandals. While I understand and appreciate the need to move on, I feel as if Charlene has lost something essential along the way. While working so hard at being perfect, she is churning out one dull album after the other. No, there`s nothing wrong with them, it`s just that they seem to be collapsing under the weight of their own good intentions, with songs that are beautifully crafted and ambitiously performed, but essentially soulless. Charlene is not alone. The majority of so-called grown-up releases by Chinese singers (especially women) suffer from this "disease". I am not expecting the bright-eyed tomboy girl to hang around forever, I am, however, expecting a fair share of real enthusiasm. Honestly I am still trying to digest Lonely Me, which was too big a mouthful of change for me. |

Charlene’s You and I
|
After CC’s debut album “Lonely Me” her second solo music project “Another Me” as turned out to be yet another sophisticated one. The mixture here in fact is like a special box of chocolates with fancy ribbon beginning with the first song “Survivor”, sung in sweet melancholic mystery, along with some other light mild rock care of Eric Kwok and Rubberband. Certain songs have a subtle Beatlesque St Pepper stings type sound and lean towards ballad form with light rock sounds from the 60s and 70s, but all essentially easy on the ears stuff. Although being a sparse five-song set, which can be limiting, CC’s subtle set of ballad and light rock makes for an overall high quality production. There’s her melancholic childlikeness again as with the previous CD, but happiness springs forth with songs “Air of Happiness” (of course) and “Classmates”. I really liked “Classmates” in fact, with its light predominant reggae melody and 70’s light rock guitar, with some quick melody riffs reminding me of 1970s super group Yes (or one of lead guy Jon Anderson’s solo songs). No doubt Charlene (the tom boy comedy girl of Twins Effect films) as moved forward with her singing and is getting more comfortable by each session (well she sounds like she is) and still maintaining her childlike beauty amidst this more redefined and reinvented womanly image of a new CC era to come. Twins on their comeback will certainly be different to the Twins of yore if, IF (no way am I going beyond an if this time..too iffy otherwise) Twins return in 2010. Although I’m reviewing the original release I’ve also bagged the USB and book editions and all I can say is all are nice to own (a must for a fan!). The black and white album concept is good and certainly iconic and the stand up poster B version of Charlene - WOW! The bonus DVD features 3 music videos of contrasting mood (and some other Charlene bits I’m not saying anything about) all similarly themed to CC’s last album, but ending with a happy panoramic scenic that leaves all things positive (and even features GC). Thinking about it (considering again track 5) I could well imagine CC singing Yes’s “Wondrous Stories”. English translated track list:- Track 1 Survivor (MV on DVD) Track 2 Put It Down (MV on DVD) Track 3 Waiting for a Hug Track 4 Air of Happiness (MV on DVD) Track 5 Classmates |

This album makes Charlene a more versatile singer, because she can handle the new music style very well. Charlene's new look is very cool and brings a freshness to the audiences. All the songs in this EP are very nice to listen. Charlene has definitely improve in her singing. |
