Antarctica may be considered as the Japanese version of Eight Below, a hugely popular movie about the bonding between an expedition team and eight huskies. In fact, this adaptation of a real-life incident was made much earlier in 1983. Japanese top actor Ken Takakura plays an explorer named Ushioda who travels to the remotest part of Antarctica in 1958. Unforeseeable circumstances prevent them from continuing the expedition, and they had no choice but to leave Antarctica in a rush without taking their huskies with them. Guilt stricken, Ushioda and one of his teammates named Ochi (Tsunehiko Watase) join another expedition one year later, just hoping to meet the dogs again, and they find out that two huskies have miraculously survived the adverse weather! Ushioda and Ochi's inner struggles and the huskies' grapple with the harsh environment interweave to offer a touching story that will move all.

　　It's a story about Japan's first scientific expedition to the Antarctic in 1958, where Ushioda and Ochi were confronted by a severe winter with their 15 sled dogs. Later they were forced to abandon all of their sled dogs in an attempt to get back home safely. They apologized for not taking the dogs with them, but people were angry and upset that they left all those beloved dogs behind. A year later, when they returned to the Antarctic to search for the dogs, they found something incredible... two of the sled dogs were still alive, against the odds of extreme weather conditions.
