January 21, 2006 Good content, bad disc Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
This album is very good with only one or two songs not worth the money. However, YesAsia has this disc being published by Virgin, but when I received the disc it was published by EMI. EMI continues to treat its paying customers like criminals by not allowing their CD's to be used on the computer and put on MP3 players. Had I known this disc was published by EMI and the correct information had been displayed by YesAsia.com, I would not have purchased this album. EMI should not get any $$$ from any of you until they join the year 2006. Who uses portable CD anymore? IF I can't put music of a legally bought CD (wait -- their "music disc" does NOT conform to the CD standard) on a MP3 player, they won't be getting my money. But again, the music content itself was very good.

Hi, I like this album also, but don't be fooled: this looks like a reissue with new photos.

October 22, 2001 Elegant, Sophisticated... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
First things first: as I'm writing this review, YesAsia has this album listed as being Cantonese, but it is actually Mandarin, and the incorrect playlist is displayed. Probably after they review these comments they will fix the problem, so don't be confused. I urge everyone to pick up this album before it disappears, since it seems as though Vivian's Mandarin items are becoming scarce here. You'll want to listen to this album with a very good pair of speakers...not to blast your ears out, but to listen to the lilt and intonation of Vivian's voice and the delicate instrumentation (especially the jazz/ lounge piano of track 9). It makes a tremendous difference. This might seem strange from listeners who think big speakers require big bass, but remember: most advances (like the invention of the CD) in audio technology come from the Classical music enthusiasts, who demand to hear every single nuance of their music (blasting bass doesn't require hi-fi speakers, just big ones). The atmosphere is intimate and warm, with Vivian softly singing just inches away. The music never overwhelms the singer, and the singer never overwhelms the listener with vocal histrionics (think Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston early in their career --when they had to prove themselves, when they had to put arpeggios and long notes into every song and assaulted ears - *none* of that here). Instead, Vivian (already an established star by the time of this album's release) makes her point with subtle inflections of voice. To summarize: this album appeals to people who shop in the "vocal" section of the record store. If you like raging guitars, pounding bass beats, distorted voices, vocal arpeggios, notes held for longer than a minute, and music louder than the singer, then you won't like this album. This is a good old fashioned pop album that reflects the elegance and clean lines on the CD cover and booklet. There's nothing wrong with that!

    October 18, 2001 Creates a Mood Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Some singers create albums with a haphazard collection of songs which do not belong together acoustically. They call this "experimentation" or a "new sound." Broken Heart Vase is *NOT* one of those albums. It is a very good album that manages to keep all of its diverse songs under a consistent sound. There are several different styles here, from the standard ballad (1,2,6), power ballad (7), soft rock (8,9), and even country western sound (5). Track 8 uses strings, and even the ballads exhibit different prominent instrumentation: piano, guitar, etc. Above it all, though, Linda's voice is the featured attraction; she is not overwhelmed by deep bass beats or electronic beeps like some other singers -- nor does she use distortion for her voice. Some of the younger singers (and listeners) would do well to listen to this album and find out what it means to "experiment" with different sounds and yet keep the album as a coherent whole. From the beginning to end, where Linda is almost speaking to the listener (10), an excellent album.
