Antique (DVD) (Japan Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Television heartthrob Ju Ji Hoon of Princess Hours fame leaps to the big screen in 2008 with the delicious blockbuster Antique. Based on the best-selling Japanese comic Antique Bakery, this delectable crowd-pleaser revolves around a cake shop run by four dashing patissiers who drive both men and women wild. Winner of the Popularity Award at the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards, Ju Ji Hoon stars as the cake shop proprietor, along with Yu Ah In (Boys of Tomorrow), Choi Ji Ho (Time Between Dog and Wolf), and Coffee Prince's Kim Jae Wook who gives an eye-catching performance as a gay pastry chef. Directed by Min Kyu Dong (Mementor Mori), Antique was an instant hit with audiences thanks to its irresistible cast and feel-good tale of friendship and pastries. The film also screened in the Culinary Cinema section of the 2009 Berlin Film Festival.

Handsome and smooth-talking corporate heir Jin Hyuk (Ju Ji Hoon) seems to have it all, but he's looking for something more, something sweeter. Though he hates cakes, he decides to open a cake shop, and hires gay high school classmate Sun Woo (Kim Jae Wook), a genius patissier with a demonic charm that no man can resist. No man, that is, except Jin Hyuk. Joined by earnest boxer-turned-patissier Gi Beom (Yu Ah In) and dim-witted bodyguard Su Young (Choi Ji Ho), they open shop in a renovated antique store in a quiet neighborhood. Brought to the same cake shop for different reasons, these four handsome men don't know what lies ahead. But one thing's for sure, when the doors to Antique swing open, the neighborhood will never be the same again!

Professional Review of "Antique (DVD) (Japan Version)"

March 2, 2010

This professional review refers to Antique (DVD) (2-Disc) (Korea Version)
Entertaining and fabulously fruity, Korean film Antique is so deliciously entertaining a moviegoing experience that its flaws are easily excused. Based on the Japanese manga Antique Bakery by Fumi Yoshinaga, Antique was brought to the screen by director Min Kyu-Dong (Memento Mori), and he gives the adaptation a fun and colorful spin perfectly suited to cinema. Min unleashes an array of narrative techniques - split screens, onscreen animation, musical numbers, dream sequences - to tell this fast-paced, sitcom-friendly tale of four impossibly beautiful guys working at the same bakery. Along the way, they change, mature, and help the police catch a child-killing kidnapper. Yeah, you read that right.

Ju Ji-Hoon of blockbuster K-drama The Palace stars as Jin-Hyeok, the sweets-hating proprietor of Antique, a patisserie that serves its treats on antique dishware. Seon-Woo (Kim Jae-Wook) is Antique's talented patissier, and is what the subtitles call a "Gay of Demonic Charm", possessing the only-in-manga ability to charm nearly any man, gay or straight, such that they'll go crazy trying to win his favor. Jin-Hyeok is immune to Seon-Woo's charms, which is a holdover from the duo's high school days when Jin-Hyeok famously and rather rudely refused Seon-Woo's confession of love. As fate would have it, the two team up years later to hawk cakes to their sugar-addicted customers, and they do it with style and aplomb, not to mention plenty of failed flirtations from Seon-Woo and verbal abuse from Jin-Hyeok.

Joining Jin-Hyeok and Seon-Woo are Ki-Beom (Yoo Ah-In), a young ex-boxer who wants to work at Antique because he can't get enough cake, and Soo-Yeong (Choi Ji-Ho), Jin-Hyeok's burly but shy childhood friend who always wears sunglasses and may be homosexual. All four of the characters have their issues and backstories, and the film introduces them all in fast, furious, and somewhat disjointed fashion. The narrative isn't always coherent; Antique packs in a ton of content into its less-than-two-hour running time, and it does so by moving at a break-neck pace, introducing us to characters and situations through offhand exposition, overlapping dialogue and scenes, and smart pauses to let important moments sink in. Min changes up his pace and tone frequently, but he never pulls the film too far from its fun, unpretentious center. This is only entertainment, and Min never pretends it's anything but, usually getting the most from his light premise and handsome, capable leading actors.

The queer content is sometimes flamboyant, echoing the source material's status as nearly a "Boys Love" manga. The film objectifies its male actors exceptionally, and is unapologetic about showing half-naked guys groping each other in a horny fashion. At the same time, the film is okay with Jin-Hyeok hurling homophobic epithets at Seon-Woo, and the film does flesh out its main characters such that they're rendered beyond their obvious bishonen stereotypes. Antique is a movie that has its cake and eats it too (pun intended), with metrosexual male cuddling and off-color insults flying left and right. Add the above to the snappy acting, slick cinematography, and fabricated art direction and you have a fun and sometimes guiltily enjoyable cinema package. Antique is a fast, funny, and sometimes rudely entertaining commercial film that handily adapts its manga inspiration while also creating its own unique identity.

The most odd thing about Antique may be its sometimes dark overtones. Besides the omnipresent serial killer subplot, the film presents Jin-Hyeok as a haunted figure, who's partly defined by attempted suicide and a dark, forgotten past. It's all a bit much for a movie celebrating the joys of baking delectable cakes, but the tonal shifts are part of the film's charm, and perfectly reflect the appeal of its specific manga genre. Manga can be so over-plotted and emotional that they're ridiculous and hard to adapt to film, but Min Kyu-Dong handles his adaptation deftly - and he does it so well, that he doesn't even have to lean on his tasty cakes and sinful recipes to make the film enjoyable. Regardless, there's still plenty of distraction to be had staring at the film's sweets, with Min delivering enough baking, eating, and serving to satiate sweet-toothed audiences anywhere. Antique is just like its signature cakes, an indulgent and artificially-sweetened confection with a fun and enjoyment that nearly crosses the line into guilty pleasure. For a dessert that sounds potentially bad for you, but for a movie it's just good, delicious fun.

Best. Movie. Ever. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I can't remember how I managed to stumble across this movie on the web, but it was the absolute BEST discovery. It had me at its opening scene, and kept me smiling the entire way through, with frequent hysterical outbursts of laughter. Seriously, one of the cutest, funniest movies I have ever seen!

I really hope people aren't frowning on the homosexual content in this film, because it is what makes this story so loveable, happy, conflicting and fun... and it really couldn't be told any other way. It's GREAT. Just have an open mind; you will fall in love with all 4 Antique boys! I know I did!

Also, I was INCREDIBLY impressed by ALL the cast's acting talent. ALL of them! They are irresistibly charming and play each of their characters with such commitment. Even the sub cast does an amazing job!

So I told all my friends about this movie, and they ALL loved it. All of them! Then I went looking all over my city's international film shops for this movie (I live in Canada!) with no luck, but finally found it here on YesAsia! I cannot wait until it arrives!

Oh yeah... and you're definitely going to want a piece of cake by the end of this film ^_^ Mmmmm!

Excellent Movie! Watch It! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie is very French. All actors did well and of course I'm a fan of Ju Ji Hoon. I'm adding my praise because it is entertaining, colorful, funny with the right exaggerations. Most importantly, I like the underlining message of enjoying your life amid imperfections and a sad past. Threat yourself to a beautiful and delicious piece of French pastry when you are down or sad, and you will feel better. Don't eat like the pastry apprentice though because you will have a heart attack! :)

TIP:Have at least one piece of your favorite French pastry ready in front of you when you start this movie because it will make you drool, lol!. Keep an open mind too! :)

Camp comedy, serious drama...cakes Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
By Antique having such a mix of contrasting film genre types, it could make you wonder how on earth all of this would work properly. Comedy, camp, serious drama and lots of cakes? But with a well-defined script, excellent acting and a director’s skill to blend these different film types together, makes for one of the most interesting Korean films of the year.

With parallels of sorts to the recent Coffee Prince K-drama by its serving shop setting (luxurious cakes this time instead of pricey coffee), this initially begins like a typical K-comedy. But with added breezy visuals and surreal theatricals (as much from camp-it-up Jae Wook Kim as the colorful cakes), this comedy soon switches genre gear into “Daesapo Naughty Fellas” with sudden bursts of dream like Busby Berkeley musical moments, by overhead synchronized dancers and multiple scene shifting stage theatrics. These musical aspects reflect the modern ‘theatre’ of TV cooking programmes with the multi colorful variety of cakes on display, and the paraphernalia involving four very eccentric and amusing characters. Along with this showy TV type advertisement inside the renovated Antique shop, this film illustrates a type of a “Moulin Rouge” Nicole Kidman surrealism.

But aside to the comedy and song and dance music, “Antique” also as some darker plot elements relating to Jin Hyuk’s past. In fact not far off the cake eating children scenario of Korean horror “Hansel and Gretel”. But although having dark tones, this film steps along to comedy shenanigans cadence than anything else.

All four main actors are perfect in their roles; a male gay queen cake maker who loves Jin Hyuk since school days, the irrational ‘girl rejected’ cake shop owner Jin Hyuk who as Jin Hyuk running after him than women, a cake chomping ex-boxer champ who is the shops apprentice and eats most of the cakes, and a deadpan body guard fella from Jin Hyuk’s past who is the quiet slow thinking type. The four’s perfect timing and camaraderie is excellent.

No doubt a film that requires an open mind set, but considering this is not a “No Regrets” type point maker, anyone can naturally enjoy the camp comedy and drama here like most other movies. But this isn’t any other movie though, as “Antique’s” finesse and quality firmly entrenches this into a sure fire Korean classic. Could even reap some awards, too.

Excellent 2 disk too with loads of extras worth seeing even without subtitles.

Simply Charming Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I found this movie to be a commical, sad, sympathetic, happy, yet if not daring film.

This is a classic tale of Antique Bakery (based off of the Japanese manga), but the Korean actors do an absolute excellent job of interpreting the story.

For those of you who are homophobes and not open minded, this is not the film for you. So don't buy this and then start bashing the film due to your beliefs. Read the description before buying this.

However, for those who are open minded, I really recommend you give this film a spin. It's like a combination of musical, play, and movie acting all in one. Some of the songs are really catchy and get to you like those from Broadway plays. (Not to mention a lot of fanservice ^^.)

I found this to be highly creative and praiseworthy. It's artistic in its presentation and you'll find yourself rewatching the film in order to see if you can interpret the movie in a different light.

This version comes with a lot of extra footage.

Nice movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I wonder if I should get this version or wait for the normal version to come out. This seems very attractive, it comes with lots goodie and it's great for collection. I promised myself last year when i saw this movie's preview that I was going to buy this regardless, but I'm little money tight now. The story is classic and the actors are great, some of them are new to movie, but still great acting.
