YesAsia Editorial Description

Comfortable, familiar, sophisticated. Just like millions of other Koreans, Se Jin (Ko So Young) lives in an apartment complex, but she's forced by loneliness to spend endless nights staring out the window. That's when she discovers something peculiar: the apartment complex next door turns off the lights every evening at 9:56 PM. It never skips a day, like a perfect Swiss clock. Even more shocking, it turns out that everyday a new life is consumed, a new murder committed in that strange apartment next door.

Traditional horror is a dying genre in Korean Cinema, with more and more first time directors testing the industry's waters through stylish quasi-horror films, which represent little more than a quick proving ground for future, more ambitious projects. But there's someone who respects tradition, and continues to shoot good old horror films: Ahn Byung Ki. The man behind Nightmare, Phone, and Bunshinsaba has returned after a long hiatus with his latest entry in the horror field, this time casting a superstar in the leading role. Ko So Young's last film was the 2003 political thriller Double Agent with Han Suk Kyu. This is her first time starring in a horror film, after spending most of her career between popular TV dramas and big screen melodramas. After its successful threatrical run in Korea, Apartment (a.k.a. APT) arrives on DVD to thrill international audiences. Just remember to keep your lights on, at least until 9:56 PM!

Apartment 704 Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The attractive packaging hides an ugly secret which is revealed in the top quality DVD which is housed in the lovely fold out case. The English subtitles are excellent, though I can't say if they're accurate, but the timing is perfect and the translation makes sense, as though the DVD were a UK or US release.

The movie itself moves at a good pace, is nicely edited, well written and very satisfying. I enjoyed this film and certainly recommend it.

South Korea does it again. Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
It is not just about J-Horror anymore. South Korea is putting out some awesome horror films as well like: "Arang", "Ryung", "Cello" and "Wishing Stairs". "Apartment" is one of them. Ahn Byung Ki is one of the masters of horror. His films "Phone", "Bunshinsaba", "Nightmare" and of course "Apartment" are some of the best Asian horror films out there. He knows how to make films that scare the viewers. Many Asian countries are putting out some quality horror films; for example: Thailand with "Shutter" and "Ghost of Mae Nak", Singapore with "The Maid", The Philippines with "Sigaw" and "Feng Shui", Hong Kong with "The Eye", "The Eye 2" and "Re-cycle" (all 3 courtesy of the Pang Brothers). Japan is still making some good ones too with "Reincarnation", "One Missed Call 2", "Marebito" and "Premonition". HEY! where is "Ju-on 3"? Bottom line: "Apartment" is a must see; must buy!

An APT Production! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Although it could be easy to think of APT as another "Ring and the Clone" type of film in its style, (well, somebody had to use that pun!) first and foremost I will say that this is a very worthy ghost movie and certainly recommended to fans of Ahn Byung Ki and Asian horror movie fans in general. Not the expected gem I was hoping for, but, if you liked ABK's other films, certainly get this one. "Phone" for me is still the best of his directed movies, and APT does have top drawer acting, pacing, lighting, style and excellent art production values and overall is a very well made film.

There will be some talk about Grudge type sounds used in this film, but in this case I thought they were used in a clever meaningful way. Not merely used to create a scare. I think Ahn Byung Ki must have decided to play tounge in cheek with the Ring/Grudge style anyway with APT, as one character proves within the film (you will have to see it to find out!).

Sadly, though, the film is a bit too predicatable in its final outcome (probably more so than "Cello"?) and the ending was a bit too blunt for me - if the script had more depth matching the excellent film making, acting etc., it would have made APT and excellent movie. I hope that Ahn Byung Ki ghost film number five exceeds this one, but this film did prove positive with me in certainly looking forward to another of his creativley styled ghost films! I certainly enjoyed this ghostly romp!
