巴格達的國王許哈瑞親眼目睹王后與親弟弟許茲納幽會，遂大怒殺了王后，從此許哈瑞國王惡夢連連視婚姻為畏途，一直沒有再選王后。但以當時的法令，如果國王沒有在一個月內迎娶新王后，就必須讓位給流放的弟弟。為了保住王位，許哈瑞想出一個辦法，先迎娶新王后，次日早晨就把絞死。這項秘密計畫在宮中傳開來，沒有人願意嫁給國王，宮中大臣賈法有個聰慧的女兒舒哈莉，自願嫁給國王，藉由每夜故事釣足國王的胃口，也使自己免於一死。夜復一夜國王終於明白她的真心。王妃舒哈莉所講的「阿里巴巴與四十大盜」、「阿拉丁神燈」、「飛天魔毯」、「真假國王」、「弄臣之死」等都是大家熟悉充滿奇幻與冒險的故事。
Shahryar, the king of Baghdad saw the secret meeting of queen and his borther Shah Zaman with his eyes. He was very angry and killed hi wife. From that time, the king had nightmare and feared of marriage. He did not choose another new queen. Yet, according to the law, if he did not marry in a month, he must abdicate his crown to his brother which was banished by him. To keep the crown, he thought out a means. That is, he selected a girl to marry and gibbet her in the next day. The minister Wazir has a smart daughter named Scheherazade. She married the king voluntarily. With the way of telling a story to lure the king not to kill her every night, finally, the king understood the genuineness of the girl...
