叔父の結婚式に参列するため、友人ポール（ヴィンセント・ギャロ）と共にアリゾナに帰郷したアクセル（ジョニー・デップ）。故郷で中古車のディーラーとして成功し、アメリカン・ドリームを達成した叔父レオ（ジェリー・ルイス）は、アクセルにとって子供の頃のヒーローだった。レオたっての要望を受け、彼の店で働くことになったアクセルは、ある日一風変わった未亡人エレイン（フェイ・ダナウェイ）と、義娘グレース（リリ・テイラー）と出会う。自由奔放なエレインの虜となったアクセルだったが、母娘と時を過ごすうち、その心は次第にグレースへと傾いていく。一方、グレースは、義母に対してコンプレックスを持ち続け、自殺願望を強めていた…。
