Two schoolgirls take an adolescent dilemma into their own hands in director Ichikawa Jun's coming-of-age drama How To Become Myself. The film brings up the universal question that we all face in the journey from childhood to adolescence: "who am I?" and "how do others perceive me?" Based on a novel by young rising writer Kaori Mado, the film follows the lives of two teenage girls played by Narumi Riko ( Honey and Clover) and Maeda Atsuko (Densen Uta). Through their daily struggles in trying to find their way through life, they find a unique solution for dealing with their growing pains.

Juri (Narumi Riko) is every parent's dream child - obedient and trouble-free. But beneath her cheerful facade is a disheartened little girl who is tired of hearing her parents fight every night. At school, Juri is neither the most popular girl nor the class outcast, which leaves her with no distinct identity of her own. Then one day, returning to class from a week-long absence, Juri is shocked to find out that the once popular girl Kanako (Maeda Atsuko) whom she had long harbored a deep admiration for, is now the class outcast. A few years later in high school, Juri recalls Kanako then contacts her via email under a disguised name. Kanako, who is now attending a different school, is instantly attracted by the anonymous emails which offer her tips on how to become the most popular girl in school. Putting them all to practice, Kanako comfortably slips into her new role, and gradually a strange unique bond develops between the two.
