An exploration of the diverse wildlife in the dramatic 'middle kingdom' of sea and land n Vancouver Island's stunning west coast. A natural buffer between the mighty Pacific Ocean and mainland Canada, the wildlife zone on the west coast of Vancouver Island is nature's battleground, a land of constant change. On the flood tide, this area is completely submerged; on the ebb, it weathers the harsh extremes of the land. The outer coast of British Columbia experiences some of the most violent surf in the world. Waves rolling in 6,000 miles from Japan may reach a height of 30 feet or more, and explode against the land at 90 miles per hour. Yet, for all the violence and harshness of this environment, this is also one of the richest habitats in the world.
Tidal pools are like miniature battle zones where starfish clash with anemones, and sea slugs stalk small crabs. Hermit crabs fight each other for possession of the best shells, or resort to constant hammering on the side of a more desireable shell to drive out its occupant. The sea is filled with snails - so many that they have been said to resemble great herds of wildebeest as they graze on the algae. The seashore attracts black bears which search for crabs among the rocks, while mink venture undewater in pursuit of the same delicacy; driven by the moon the the tides, herrings come inshore to spawn and fill the sea with clouds of sperm; the mass spawning of herrings attracts dolphins, sealions and eagles - which all thrive on this annual bounty. This film depicts an area of extreme conditions and great beauty through the changing seasons.
