葉榮添(羅嘉良)生於六十年代的香港，父親因為人忠義而慘被親弟出賣，無辜入獄。添引以為鑑，處事待人均以利字當頭，為了報仇更加不擇手段。其後，添接手發展一個爛尾村屋樓盤，並與好友馬志強(郭晉安)、許文彪(陳錦鴻)合組公司，賺取了第一桶金。
正當添沾沾自喜之際，仇家竟將其弟(劉愷威)之雙腳打斷，添深受打擊下頓時醒悟，痛改前非。相反，凡事講求原則的彪赫然發現自己所尊敬的師傅竟是貪污之徒，價值觀徹底崩潰，加上急需大量金錢助其弟張自力(古天樂)脫險，漸漸沉淪，變得心狠手辣，與添之友誼亦告破裂。
另方面，添邂逅善良的岑穎欣(郭可盈)，兩人互生情愫，惜添曾辜負田寧(蔡少芬)，不願再闖情關，遂將感情埋藏心底，對於一直暗戀自己的霍希賢(陳慧珊)亦只視作為好友。幾番輾轉後，欣與彪結合，不料彪在台灣被殺，欣頓成第一嫌疑犯......
註：由於母帶已製作經年，故在製作VCD的過程中，必須進行調色、重新配樂及剪輯等後期工作。但所有後期工作均在有必要的情況下進行，並以不影響劇情為原則。

Wish it was on DVD!
| This is probably the most notable tv series from TVB since who knows how long ago, yet....IT'S NOT OUT ON DVD! What's up with that? TVB's released some of the most pointless series on DVD, don't you think it's time to put out DVD's that will actually cash in some money for them? |

At the Threshold of an Era I
| The series itself is amazing--I watched it several years ago and have finally gotten around to buying it. However, one problem I had was that one of the episodes is missing in the 2nd disk of Part I. I know for sure that there is a skip because I've watched it before as well as you can tell just by the flow of the episodes. But aside from that, this is definitely recommended. |

Another classic!!
| This is a must watch epic for all who consider themselves fans of TVB. Plenty of vicious and deadly office politics behind the dreams of reaching for the skies. Awesome acting from Louis Koo and Gallen Lo as well! |

The Yip character by Gallen Lo had a hugh impact on me five years ago. I actually found myself and what I wanted to do in my life. Sounds so serious but this is sure very inspiring to people who want to be successful in life. You can learn about life. |

Great Drama!
| I've never watched such a long-spanned, well-planned, and thoughtful drama before! Each cast has his/her consistent policy and the themes of this long drama are 'the proccess of success of this big and conbributing business over the decades in Hong Kong' and 'strong and eternal belief on friendship and family'..... I'm so impressed by this long drama and very very looking forward to purchasing the rest of the VCDs that is not yet published by TVB!!!!!! I strongly hope TVB release the rest of this drama as soon as possible. |
