YesAsia Editorial Description
Directed by Kim Jin Min, Au Revoir! UFO is a simple and touching romantic comedy that builds on the charm and chemistry of its two leads. Released in 2004, the film stars top actor Lee Bum Soo (City of Violence) and the late Lee Eun Joo. While some yearn for passion and excitement, simple-minded bus driver Sang Hyun (Lee Bum Soo) is overly shy and socially awkward. Working the night shift in the outskirts of Seoul, unpretentious Sang Hyun enjoys listening to old records and occasionally playing DJ. He has long admired Kyong Wu (Lee Eun Joo), a young blind woman who frequently rides his bus and likes to talk about UFOs. Kyong Wu just recently ended an unpleasant relationship, and is ready to start anew. For these two strangers on a night bus, romance begins with a gentle conversation.

Thoroughly charming romance
Thoroughly charming romance

In "Au Revoir UFO", Sang Hyun (Lee Bum Soo) is a rather shy and socially awkward night-shift bus driver, who finds self-expression in recording his own "radio" shows in which he acts as the DJ and plays Korean oldie rock songs. He plays the tapes of his "radio" show on the bus. Kwong Wu (the late Lee Eun Joo) is a blind young woman who has moved to this remote city to flee the wreckage of a ruined romance. She rides Sang Hyun's bus home from work each evening and enjoys listening to the "radio" shows. Sang Hyun runs into Kwong Wu on the street one day and, through a series of misunderstandings, ends up lying to Kwong Wu about who he is. He tells her that his name is Pyung Gyu and that he owns the local electronics shop. Once trapped in these lies, Sang Hyun doesn't know how to get out of them as the friendship between "Pyung Gyu" and Kwong Wu grows rapidly and begins to develop into romance. The film focusses on simple issues: Is Kwong Wu ready for a new romance? How will she react when she learns about Sang Hyun's silly lies? Lee Bum Soo and Lee Eun Joo have such a wonderful on-screen chemistry that the viewer comes to care very much about how these issues will be resolved. This particularly is a testimony to Lee Eun Joo's acting skills; she must develop this chemistry while maintaining the illusion of being blind. We lost a wonderful young actress when she took her own life. The film's efforts to weave into the story additional elements concerning UFO sightings, family connections, colorful local characters, and Kwong Wu's old boyfriend sometimes work well and sometimes don't work at all, but the core of the story -- Sang Hyun's unreserved affection for Kwong Wu and the wounded Kwong Wu's ambivalent reaction to that affection -- is handled beautifully. I recommend this charming romance very highly for a general audience. |

Cotton candy, lollipops and bubblegum.
Cotton candy, lollipops and bubblegum.

This is cottoncandy lollipop and bubblegum romcom from South Korea. An established genre that Hollywood can't and won't touch these days. The girls wear dresses. Love is always an all encompassing blinding complete affair for these asian movies. Refreshing. There is a UFO sidebar to this movie but not enough to distract from the two young gorgeous leads that meet on a bus, have plenty of mishaps and misunderstandings and of course cross each other's paths every 8 hours until the inevitable falling in love soon occurs. Yummy. Beats whatever drama or horror or reality show just spat out at the cookie factories in Hollywood. This movie is based on a well patterned cookie mold too...but baked with the best of ingredients, done lovingly, and prepared for the best of savourous bites. Or you could pick up a box of factory cookies at the video store that have been there for three months. |

not bad
|
The movie has a certain sweetness to it, which is good. I won't say that it's "You gotta watch it" kinda movie, but it's okay if you want to watch something to pass the time. |

Such a Akward Romatic Comedy... but Its So Good!
|
This movie at first was a bit wierd when I read the title... i didnt understand the name and thought that it was gonna be a plot-less story with slap-stick humour.. Boy was I wrong... This movie is the perfect romantic comedy... You wanna root for the guy even if he looks and acts like a geek... Too good! |
