Fang Ying shines as Auntie Lan Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
What truly sets "Auntie Lan" apart from other Shaw Brothers' romantic dramas is not its unwed mother theme, but the understated, graceful way that the theme is handled. Credit goes to master director Yueh Feng for skillfully and smoothly helming this beautifully-told story.

Credit also goes to Fang Ying who is perfect in the role of the unwed mother. The three male leads, including Chiao Chuang, Chang Chung and Jimmy Wang Yu, also do admirable work as Fang Ying's suitors. Indeed, I believe that this is one of Chiao Chuang's finest roles.

In less skilled hands, this tale might have become a tawdry vehicle with much overbroad melodrama. Instead, "Auntie Lan" is a quietly soulful tale of a young woman who seeks to live a life of integrity after making a youthful mistake. I recommend this film very highly for a general audience.

Fang Yin at her best! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I have never been a fan of Fang Yin. Indeed I have deemed her responsible for spoiling the huang mei musical A Maid From Heaven by lipsynching without expression the songs beautifully sung for her by Tsin Ting. However in this suberb drama, she turns her weaknesses as an actress into strengths as she plays an insecure, awkward, hesitant unwed mother. Her lack of confidence seems so natural here unlike her other roles where she has appeared glaringly underdeveloped as an actress opposite other more accomplished actresses like in Diary Of A Ladykiller. There is also wisdom and maturity in this movie shot in the 60s. The lesson to be learnt is that if someone really loves you, they will love the ones that you love even if it is an illegitimate child borne out of wedlock. 3 of Shaws top actors are her suitors.....Paul Chang Chung, Chiao Chuang and kungfu star Wang Yu in a rare drama role. Who will win her heart? Buy this movie on dvd or vcd and find out. I guarantee you will be pleased with your purchase!
