Director: Chun Kim
Yiu Ling-yam works as a tutor at Crape Myrtle Garden. She witnesses the plight of the family members under the authoritative leadership of Matriarch Kok. Yam brings hope to the family, helping the young men and women of the house to find their true selves. She encourages the youngsters of the household, second grandson Hok-si and Mok-sau to try to turn the outdated, desolate and depressing scenes into something new. She also invites the sentimental eldest grandson Chung-si and repressed Fung-yee to take part in their renovation activities. Although they do not join the activities, they are already imparted a fresh vitality by Yam.
Yam shows great concerns about Chung-si, always advising him to brace up to the challenges of life. They gradually nurse intimate feelings for each other. Chung-si makes bold to date Yam, temporarily forgetting his illness and mental pains. Yee is a widow and is forbidden by Matriarch Kok, who controls the whole mansion, to remarry her former lover. Frustrated by social customs and family rules, Yee once resorted to suicide. The reappearance of her former lover and the presence of Yam reinforce Yee's resistance and she elopes with her former lover. But Yam is devastated by the death of Chung-si after an illness. She chooses to leave while Hok-si grieves over her departure.

Good Movie
| This is apparently one of director Chor Yuen's first movie since he is listed as the writer and assistant director. Believe movie was made in 1957 which means he was only 23 at the time. The music is beautiful and haunting. Finally get to see lovely Pak Yin remain young and beautiful throughout a movie. As always the overall quality of the film is not perfect. Wish Pearl City had the money and foresight to redigitalize these old Cantonese movies like Shaw Brothers is doing with their movies. I am hoping there are more movies like this one and that they will be available for purchase in the future. Would recommend this one especially to any ardent Pak Yin fan who loves to watch her. |
