YesAsia Editorial Description
Ghost in the Shell auteur Oshii Mamoru has made four live-action feature films in his career, the most recent being 2001's groundbreaking Polish-Japanese sci-fi co-production Avalon. Primarily filmed in Poland with a Polish cast and Polish dialogue, Avalon is very much in keeping with Oshii's style and aesthetic, playing with metaphysical themes in a strikingly rendered, technologically advanced and imagined world of the future.
In the distant future, everyone is connected to an addictive virtual reality game called Avalon. In contrast to the mundane humdrum of the real world, the game takes players into a fantastical war-torn realm where they do battle with modern and medieval weapons of their choosing. Though the game is virtual, it has very real consequences for the players. As they enter higher levels, players let their spirits remain in the game, leaving their physical bodies to wither in a comatose state. When player Ash (Malgorzata Foremniak) discovers there is a secret hidden level in Avalon called "Special A", she forms a team and embarks on a quest to find the level.

I just couldn't get excited about this film despite it being highly reviewed. You need to understand RPGs in order to understand the film. It is slow and pensive. The effects are fantastic, but there are so few. I hated the ending because it felt like the director just took a camcorder around with him in public rather than attempt to stage extras. Great idea, great effects, but just not enough effort to make this a truly great film all round. |

Good film, worth seeing.

This movie is interesting and had some great effects! It is a trip to watch a movie in Polish after watching so many asian movies. This movie is not what you expect, you can't guess the whole story after 5 minutes. |
