World-renowned cinematographer Christopher Doyle, best known for his famous collaborations with Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai, made his directorial debut in the 1999 Hong Kong-Japan-Singapore co-production Away with Words. In addition to his own camerawork, Doyle also co-wrote the film's script with Tony Rayns, giving his stylish visual language a unique and complete voice.
Known in Japan as Kujaku (literally "peacock"), the pan-Asian indie film stars acclaimed Japanese actor Asano Tadanobu as Asano, a man from Okinawa whose extraordinary memory has been tormenting him. He decides to escape to the world outside, and he finds himself in a gay bar in Hong Kong at the end of his wandering, where he meets two fellow outcasts - the alcoholic bar-owner (Kevin Sherlock) and a somber barmaid (Singapore singer Mavis Hee).
