Not her best

Now every year I practically wet myself with excitement when Ayu releases her Live Tour DVD and I am sure every fan who isn’t lucky enough to go to Japan to see her in the flesh feels the same. But how does Ayu’s latest Next Level Tour shape up against the others? Well to be truthful Next Level is far from my favourite Ayu concert. Firstly her vocals don’t quite sound top notch to me. Ayu sings wonderfully when performing her ballads but when she has to dance and sing her voice lacked power, something I never noticed in her other concerts. I also found myslef unimpressed by some of the staging, cheerleaders, black tie and big white dresses we have seen many times before. Where are the touches of originality such as the large flying ship that made a appearance the previous year? BUT its not all disappointing. Aside from getting to watch Ayu for a couple of hours, which lets face it is worth every penny, the best part of the concert was when Ayu donned a sequined jacket and shades to perform Rollin’ and Sparkle. With the expression of a blow of doll and the movements of a robot the choreography, lighting and costumes all made these songs a wonderful spectacle that was the high point of the concert! And of course the bonus back stage footage is always a pleasure to watch!!! Although not as original or perhaps vocally polished as her other fantastic collection of Tours Next Level is a MUST for any hard core fan but if you are new to Ayu you might want to try one of her previous concerts. |
