Director Kitamura Ryuhei (Versus) helms Azumi, a 2003 film adaptation of the long-running manga series from Koyama Yu. Ueto Aya (Install, TV drama Attack No. 1) stars as the title character, a deadly and uber-cute ninja assassin who embarks on a mission to take down three vicious warlords in feudal Japan. At first, she and her fellow young trainees welcome the task, but their debut as full-fledged ninja comes with a tragic test: each of them must kill their best friend! The experience helps prepare Azumi for her difficult life as an assassin, which is fraught with tough moral choices, colorful villains, and rivers of blood flowing from the villains she dispatches - who happen to number in the hundreds!

Featuring a cast of popular J-Cinema names, including Takenaka Naoto (Shall We Dance?), Narimiya Hiroki (Nana), and Odagiri Jo (Shinobi) as a psychotic swordsman, Azumi delivers plenty of the kinetic action that fans of director Kitamura Ryuhei expect. The blood-soaked highlight of the film is the climactic battle, where Azumi takes on wave after wave of foes in a mind-blowing 200-against-1 sword battle. At the center of the maelstrom, pint-sized Ueto Aya delivers a fetching performance as the conflicted, but ultimately quite deadly title character. Upon its theatrical release, Azumi became so popular that it spawned a 2005 sequel, Azumi 2: Death or Love.

The story of Azumi is adapted from a massive hit comic in Japan. In war-torn Japan, the Tokugawa Shogun, desperate to restore peace to his people, orders the assassination of the hostile warlords. AZUMI (Aya Ueto) is raised from birth with nine other orphans to become an assassin. Prior to setting out on their mission, their master orders his students to "pair up" with each others' best friend and proceed to kill each other......Azumi reaches a gruesome climax with one of most memorable beheadings seen in film.
