February 8, 2008 A fitting GOODBYENow that IVL/ Celestial had released all of Lin Dai's
color movies made at Shaw Studio, it is with great
sadness ( and elation too )to see "Diau Charn" finally
made ( actually her FIRST color movie at Shaw ) its
DVD appearance. Thank you, Celestial, for such a beautiful restoration, the color sparkles, her smile
lit up the screen like no other actress of that era.
Lin Dai's performance was truly deserving of her SECOND "Best Actress" award at the Asian Film Festival. Fans should also be thankful about the bonus disc that showed her old home and her godchild
Fung Bo Bo's tearful reminensces. They surely don't make stars like Lin Dai anymore. I wonder if it is wishful thinking maybe Celestial will restore some of her other black and white movies made at Shaw's so we
can at least have more "artifacts" from an era when Hongkong movies were not just about bullets and idiots running amuck ! If Celestial think that black and white movies from 50-60s have no commercial value
nowadays, then "Diau Charn" would be a fitting farewell
"gift" to all classic film fans. So, Goodbye Lin Dai,
Goodbye Celestial ! May your other future DVD releases be as good as "Diau Charn".

August 1, 2007 Alluring is more like it !
Yeh Fung ( Julie Yeh) is certainly a Shen Mi Nu Lang
(Mystery Woman),a pretty face, a statuesque figure
plus that alluring "devil may care" voice, she is one
gorgeous MOVIE STAR ! Late in her contract years with
CATHAY Studio, her singing talents came to full blossom, as this collection of songs atest to, here's
hoping PATHE will release a volume two of her movie
songs- one can't get enough of Julie's "allure" !!!!

Pathe 100: The Series 33 - Long Xiang Feng Wu
1 people found the following helpful
August 1, 2007 A lmost a soundtrack album !Fans of the landmark Cathay musical "CALENDAR GIRL"
(Long Xiang Feng Wu of 1958-59) rejoice ! This CD
release of all the songs from that great musical will
certainly provide hours of nostalgic joy ! The movie
stars glamourous Li Mei and Chang Chung Wen ( dubbed by singers Deng Bai Ying and Yi Min on the soundtrack), if only PATHE had put a color scene from
this beautiful movie on the CD cover- that would be the perfect momento for CATHAY classic film fans !
No offense to singers Deng and Yi, their singing were
great on this CD !!!

The Films Of Wong Tin Lam (1) (Hong Kong Version)
July 26, 2006 Wong Tin Lam deserves better !Shame on PANORAMA for putting together TWO widescreen
CATHAY classics ("Because of Her" and "Mad mad sword")
which were released previously in a terrible panned
and scanned version, now these two marred versions
are re-packaged into a 5-film box set, are these two
film remastered in the proper aspect ratio ? Should we
buy this to find out ? YESASIA owes their customers
to have more PRODUCT information and meanwhile Director Wong Tin Lam desrves better tribute than this box set !!

The Story Of Sue San (Hong Kong Version)
2 people found the following helpful
February 1, 2006 Brava Lok Tai ! Bravo King Hu !"Story of Sue San"got an excellent re-telling here in
this well directed and superbly acted movie version of
popular Peking opera story. Gorgeous Lok Tai in another
of her signature long-suffering fragile beauty role
gave it her all, proving again why she was the MOST
ADORED heroine as far as Chinese costumned movies are
concerned, her face, her voice, her finger's movement,
her gait, her posture, her tears all add to a performance that was unrivaled then and has shine even
brighter now. No wonder there is such a craze of
adoration for this actress today ( atested by the recently published TWO biographies ). Shaw/ Celestial
should hurry up and release ALL her movies that are
still sitting in the studio vaults. World reknown director King Hu (pre-"Dragon Inn" fame) guided the
production with his sure hand in this very beloved
melodrama that will surely be enjoyed by all.

(1)Our Price: US$12.99Usually ships within 7 - 14 daysDecember 9, 2005 Rare gems from fondly remembered moviesThis volume 19 of the wonderful "PATHE 100" series of
nostalgic mandarin pop songs is a veritable feast of
songs taken from many CATHAY movies of the 50-60s,
an era where movies ALWAYS have songs and every song
seemed to be so hummable and delightful. Called it
simplistic charm or whatever...it will definitely
be like a breath of fresh air or a warm hug from an
old friend, you don't know about Cathay movies ? Click
on to this webstore and look for movies like "Wild Wild Rose", "Mambo Girl", etc. There are plenty to
get acquainted with.

Pathe 100: The Series 16 - Zuo Ye Wo Wei Ni Shi Mian
September 21, 2005 Last Night you keep me AWAKE ! That was TRUE !This CD's title, "Last Night You kept me Awake" certainly lives up to its title ! What a great collection of wonderful songs, Aside from the well known Tsin Teng, who is this Yu Fei ? Are there more
gems in the EMI-Pathe vaults ? Let us have some more !
Song number one- "Diamond Flower" was also intriguing,
I thought this was a Ge Lan song from the movie, its
lilting melancholy tune certainly brings back memories
of this rare movie, but why was it not sang by Ge Lan ?
Ahhh...the songs definitely keep me awake ALL NIGHT !!
Because I played it over and over again... One of the
BEST in this wonderful series.

August 13, 2005 Adorable naivite !
Fans of Shanghai pop or specifically Mandarin movie song
hits of the 50-60s REJOICE !!!! Now EMI had issue a new
series of CDs focusing on this very special genre of movie/pop
hits sang by great great singers of the 40-60s, among the 23
CDs of this new "PATHE 100: The Series" one can find all
the wonderful singers that dominated the Hongkong movies
of that era--a time when even Lin Dai was not dubbed and
sang in her own thin, lovable voice. She may not have the
polish of Li Shiang Lan or the range of Ge Lan, but she have
of lot of "chuzpah", the emotions shined through...it is no
wonder this very woman became such a popular movie star
later on. Nostalgia fans should grab this CD and let it have
a good space in the memorabilia treasure trove---the movies
may have rotted but the melodies and that adorable girl will
live in your mind forever !!

Goldenward Series Of Chinese Movies - Tiao Chan (Taiwan Version)
Goldenward Series Of Chinese Movies - Tiao Chan (Taiwan Version) DVD Region All
(1)Our Price: US$7.99Usually ships within 7 - 14 daysJune 7, 2004 Excellent film of historical beauty TIAO CHANTang Bao Yun gave an excellent performance as great
patriotic beauty Tiao Chan in Chinese history, considering the fact that Tang has to go against all
memory of Lin Dai's (and other Chinese stage and film
actresses performance of the same character)award winning performance in Shaw Studio's "Tiao Chan". This
is a film well worth collecting despite the glaring
error of the disc's producer's using the abominable
way of panning and scanning a widescreen movie. One
wishes that these producers should WAKE UP now and
keep the proper aspect ratio while digitizing these
great films for DVD release.

Air Hostess
July 30, 2003 Song HITS galore in DELIGHTFUL ,DELECTABLE, DELICIHow many Chinese movies have you seen that explore the
new found professional career world of women in post-war Hongkong ? "Air Hostess" was one of the most innovative film that came out of post war HK, not only did it use color and multi-foreign locations as background, it also dwelve into the lifestyle changing
world of well educated women who dare to challenge the
traditional role of women in Chinese society. Ge Lan,
the pride and treasure of Cathay studio had delivered
another enjoyable performance to her fans after the
big box office hit of "Mambo Girl", this time you can see her song and dance numbers in FULL COLOR, paving
her way to another more fully realized work in the later "WILD WILD ROSE". Fans of Ge Lan should be grateful to Panorama for releasing all these gems from
the Cathay vaults, now we are ready for more !!!!!
How about "June Bride" soon ??

The Story Of Three Loves I
July 30, 2003 Another GREAT performance from a GREAT CASTSTORY OF THREE LOVES was the third movie that BOTH
CATHAY and SHAW had filmed in a frenzied competitive
move to produce movies based on the same story. Nowadays it is really fun to see which studio made the
better of the 3 sets of duplicate movies. For me, CATHAY has always have a better cast because performers like Ge Lan, Lin Cui and Roy Chiao are just
too special there are no equivalent talents over in the
Shaw stable. Specially Ge Lan, she gave another"tour-de
-force" performance playing dual roles. Roy Chiao was
equally good as the arch villain warlord and Lin Cui and Wang Yin gave their usual solid performances proving their stellar stature in that era. One hopes that Cathay will release their other triumphant
show "Magic Lamp" soon so fans can relish the great
jobs that Ge Lan, Lin Cui and Yu Min did.
