蔡瀾，祖籍廣東潮州，出生於新加坡，從小住在戲院樓上，自小受電影熏陶。父蔡文玄先生，戰爭年代移居南洋，以詩人著稱；母洪芳聘女士，小學校長。蔡瀾14歲在《南洋商報》發表第一篇文章，16歲離開新加坡，到日本留學專攻電影，並在日本為邵氏電影工作。之後在紐約、漢城、印度、尼泊爾各地流浪。1963年，22歲的蔡瀾定居香港，任邵氏電影公司製作經理，十多年後任嘉禾電影公司副總裁，曾監製一系列成龍的電影。80年代起至今出版逾六十本著作，種類包括遊記、人物、食經、笑話、人生哲學等。92年在亞洲電視與倪匡和黃霑主持清談節目，轟動一時。97年在無線電視主持旅遊節目，非常受歡迎。94年開始染指飲食業，包括生產自創的食品及飲評，以及經營食肆。
