Professional Review of "Baby (Japan Version)"
Aiko's fans have waited a very long time for new material from the Japanese singer-songwriter. After two years, their patience was finally rewarded with the release of her ninth studio album, Baby, her follow-up to 2008's Himitsu. Since her debut in 1998, Aiko has set herself apart from her peers with her love songs and cheerful personality, both in her real life as well as in her music. In Baby, she continues to show these features and has no problems adding to her already well-established fanbase. The album starts off with two uptempo tracks in beat and Kagami. beat is a fast-paced, blues song that sounds like it's from the 1920s speakeasy days of the United States. The piano melody on the track is quite catchy and you'll find yourself tapping your toes to the music. Kagami is a very peppy and uplifting song with a fun piano and brass arrangement. Her 25th single, milk, follows and with its big band jazz sound, it's more the type of song she's known for. The fourth and arguably strongest track of the record, KissHug, is a lovely ballad which shows the strength and range of Aiko's voice. It was featured as the theme song of the smash hit film Hana Yori Dango: Final, one of the four songs off Baby that has been featured commercially in other media. In addition, Modorenai Ashita (Track 11) and Ano Ko no Yume (Track 12) served as the theme songs for Japanese dramas Magerarenai Onna and Welkame, respectively, while Nageki no Kiss (Track 7) was the image song for the video game Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time. Given Aiko's specialty in passionate, romantic love songs, it's only natural that they are frequently used as theme songs for Japanese dramas and movies. Other highlights from the album are Natsu ga Kaeru (Track 5) and Yellow (Track 10). The latter is a wonderful ballad that once again shows off her unique voice. Rather than being overshadowed by the piano or guitar like in some of the other tracks, it's just her voice that carries Yellow. You can hear and almost feel the passion that she has for the song and what she's singing about from her vocals alone, truly a treat for the ears. Aiko proves again that she knows exactly what the public wants, evident by Baby's spot on top of the Oricon charts upon its release. By sticking to singing about what she knows best, the charismatic superstar has delivered a solid album that will definitely satisfy her diehard fans. by Leon Lee |

BABY, she's back
It's been almost two years since aiko's last studio album came out, a rare sight from an artist who usually releases albums a year to a year and a half apart. With that said, BABY might be aiko's strongest album yet. While many fans have moved on due to aiko's everlasting sound of music and still rave her earlier albums her strongest, BABY has proved to be aiko's most refined to date. I personally enjoyed her previous studio album, Himitsu, so there was skeptical if she could pull it off again, but she did. The singles that were released off the album prior to its release were among her strongest. KissHug is an epic ballad with an explosive chorus and gorgeous melody, while milk plays around with an exciting pop jazz hybrid sound that is sure to get one bouncing. Nageki no Kiss and Modorenai Ashita are the most similar to aiko's past music, but sound far more refined. The vocals are strong and the melodies are stronger. The latter has become a favourite of mine because it adds a touch of rock in it and is reminiscent of my favourite song from her, Kondo Made ni Wa. While the singles did not lack, the albums tracks proved just as great. The most obvious stand out of the bunch was Yellow, a stunning ballad with a catchy and memorable chorus. Another stunning ballad includes the ending, Tunnel, which was aiko's 2010 CM song. It has a similar structure to that of Nageki no Kiss. While the ballads were strong, it's not to say there were no good upbeat songs. The opener, beat is a charming pop song, while Natsu ga Kaeru is an exciting summer tune. The strongest is without a doubt Ano Ko no Yume, a lighthearted pop/rock song that was used for a drama. It is probably my favourite of the album tracks. Overall, BABY is without my current favourite album of 2010. It features a wide array of sounds, while still maintaining that aiko essence. The singles were strong and the album tracks did not disappoint. |
