In 2000, director Thanit Jitnukul made the big-budget historical war drama Bang Rajan, about a group of brave villagers in 1700s Siam defending the nation from an invasion by the Burmese army. With spectacular action sequences and one of the most famous battles in Thai history as its setting, the film was a major hit in Thailand, taking a big step in introducing Thai cinema to the world. Ten years later, Jitnukul returns to the Bang Rajan world with a new crew, a new cast, and a new battle for Bang Rajan 2, an ambitious sequel that greatly expands the storytelling scope from the first film.

Taking place two years after the events of the first film, Bang Rajan 2 follows a group of patriotic warriors - led by a Buddhist monk that survived the Bang Rajan battle - hiding out in a mountain village that also commits guerilla attacks on the occupying Burmese army. The group has proven itself to be powerful enough that the Burmese army sends out a general to hunt down the monk. The warriors, however, are able to defeat the troops and take in their Siamese prisoners. The act of charity proves to be a mistake, as the new additions to the group begin to trigger tension within the resistance movement, as differing opinions about how to take down the Burmese army begin to drive the once tight-knitted group apart.
