YesAsia Editorial Description

Directed by Oxide Pang (The Eye), Hong Kong romance Basic Love wistfully follows the changing relationship among three friends as they navigate the joys and heartaches of youth, love, and friendship. Singer-actress Elanne Kwong (New Police Story), model-turned-actress Janice Man (Lingerie), and newcomer Rex Ho from boy band Square star as high school best friends Ling, June, and Rex. Quiet and reticent June holds a torch for Rex, but he only has eyes for Ling - who's hiding a devastating secret of her own behind her bright and chatty exterior.

Departing from his signature twist-filled horrors, writer-director Oxide Pang delivers a pure love youth melodrama that wears its heart gallantly on the sleeve. Artfully shot with Pang's usual eye for color and cinematography, Basic Love stands out in its heartfelt simplicity, and shines with fine performances from the fresh young cast. Janice Man, in particular, garnered attention for breaking from her doll-like image, and for locking lips onscreen with Elanne Kwong. The film also features supporting appearances from veteran actress Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and the other three members of Square.

This edition comes with making of and theme song music video. First Press versions come with Soundtrack CD (only while supplies last).

The Young and the Restful
It's too bad that Basic Love has fallen so completely under the radar as it's one of the few true romances to come out of Hong Kong in recent years. Certainly, out of the four love-titled films that hit Hong Kong theaters around Valentine's Day, Basic Love is the only one that resembles anything close to a moving love story.

Hong Kong Cinema's take on romance in the last few years have consisted largely of glossy rom-coms and Patrick Kong blockbusters that equate modern love with a game of deceit. In such an atmosphere, Basic Love feels almost unique for sticking to a classic love-triangle melodrama, and remaining refreshingly free of agenda and cynicism. An oddly sincere release, especially coming from horror director Oxide Pang, Basic Love is probably closer to the youth romances that Japan churns out than a typical Hong Kong offering, except it lacks the star power and audience to carry locally.

This coming-of-age teen tearjerker revolving around three friends who aren't very good at voicing their hearts follows a storyline predictable to anyone who's ever so much as watched a Korean drama episode. But Basic Love also stays fairly subtle and understated for its duration, mostly steering clear of blatant waterworks in favor of a quieter, calmer look at love, life, and friendship. Although more drama and fewer realistically mundane conversations would have made for a more interesting viewing, the decision to balance the pure love story with grounded characters is commendable, and helps soften the cliches to something closer to reality. Call me wishful, but I'd like to think that the decent, reticent protagonists of Basic Love who can't face each other honestly in romance because they value their friendship are more realistically drawn than the back-stabbing backup lovers of a Patrick Kong romance.

Newcomer Rex Ho makes a respectable if not especially remarkable debut as the guy caught in between. His performance is realistic in that it clearly lacks any method. Though raw and opaque, Ho is not without promise, and is in the very least worth a second movie's chance considering Hong Kong Cinema's severe lack of new young male talent. Similarly, Elanne Kwong remains a name worth watching, though her deliberate performance in the film feels out of place at times alongside her quieter, less experienced co-stars. It is surprisingly Janice Man who delivers something of a breakthrough performance. Shedding her dolled-up looks, big-eye contact lens, and spoiled-princess airs, the model-turned-actress, who was for a while one of the most ubiquitous faces in Hong Kong, is almost unrecognizable as a normal soft-spoken teen with an unrequited crush on her friend. Her character is easily the most compelling of the three leads.

One would be forgiven for expecting some kind of supernatural twist going into this movie considering Oxide Pang is at the helm, but Basic Love stays true to the film's almost defiantly old-fashioned Chinese title - "Love Story". The only twists here are the occasional odd camera shots, the overuse of the fuzzy lens, and that gratuitous Elanne Kwong-Janice Man onscreen kiss which generated most of the film's buzz.

Basic Love is far from original or exciting, but it never feels less than sincere and straightforward in its intentions and sentiments. It's certainly not for the cynical or the impatient, but for those in the market for a simple pure love youth film, Basic Love offers a touching, attractively lensed love story that agrees with the eyes and heart.

A painful melancholic love sketch Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Sad movies can prove difficult depending on you’re scheme of things. Its Friday night lets watch a…sad movie! One thing for sure, “Basic Love” by the three protagonists mixed, pensive and tragic love woes, may leave you concerned with the positive romantic final. The painful tragic sacrifice and hindered relationship woes make here a ‘good’ ending only truly ironic, with heartfelt love concluding with an uncertain and unfulfilled relationship pushing towards maturity of understanding, at best. Love union shouldn't only be about having the ‘right feelings’ slotted into present and correct anyway. Still, “Basic Love” is a poetic growing pains type cinema from Oxide Pang worth seeing. Mostly a mood piece than plot focused; here three bonded school friends Ling (Elanne Kwong), June (Janice Man) and Rex (Rex Ho) share illusive personal feelings about love and death. At final gradation day Rex, a member of a rock band, performs a moving piano piece for the graduates and what becomes a love token to Ling or June. Both Ling and June have personal thoughts about love and the future (even a intimate camp fire kiss), with Rex at the center of things, and paradoxically withholding unspoken love feelings. A sharp emotional turn happens when Ling is revealed to have leukaemia and admitted to hospital but tries to keep her disease concealed. Ling’s ill health though opens up the trios love concerns.

Ling unable to commit to a loving relationship due to her illness, of June’s love for Rex and Rex’s love for the dying Ling, are friends who wish not to hurt the other, but remain confused and hurt in love. By ‘crucial’ subjective complicated soul mate concerns and Ling’s illness override Ling, June and Rex’s objective clarity to ‘see’ clearly what they truly should mean to each other as basic friends. Love happy? They're confused. Essential logic? Focused love? The fuzzy edged camera shots can reflect the blurred blind love surrounding the centrally focused one-track ‘crush love’ emotion, or maybe a central focus of basic love. Acting is inspiring. Janice is quite seriously mysterious (even in the making of), emotionally introverted and maturely pensive in her ‘quiet’ role. Elanne puts in strong emotional despair and feelings as Ling and Rex’s acting compliments both girls. The added OST CD with main piano theme makes for a really lovely score. In ways “Basic Love” shares a premise with “Lover’s Concerto” with Eun Ju Lee, Ye Jin Son and Tae Hyun Cha.

This customer review refers to Basic Love (DVD) (US Version)
The ultimate chick flick Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Basic Love" is a tale of three old schoolfriends locked in an unusual love triangle. Rex (Rex Ho) loves Ling (Elanne Kwong). Ling's best friend June (Janice Man) loves Rex. And Ling loves Rex, too. None of them talk about their affections, even now that they have graduated and are working, because they are afraid to blow up their perfect friendships. And now Ling has bigger concerns; the leukemia from which she suffers will not leave her long to live. How the characters respond to this desperate circumstance forms the story for this Oxide Pang-directed film.

Much of the movie is shot in peculiar off-center close-ups, where we see the character's head off to one side of the frame. Indeed, we often see only part of the head, with the rest of the person's noggin falling outside of the frame. Often in Janice Man's scenes, the depth of field of a shot is very narrow, so that only Janice's flawless face is in focus and the rest of the frame is blurry. This artsy approach to cinematography creates some striking images, but can seem a bit pretentious.

Any Hong Kong movie with a girl-with-a-fatal-disease theme immediately calls to mind the Anita Yuen classic, "C'est La Vie, Mon Cheri". What makes "C'est La Vie" such an unforgettable film -- apart from Anita's knockout performance -- is its rich and detailed depiction of the intriguing Cantonese opera milieu inhabited by Anita's character. The story of "Basic Love", like its cinematography, has a narrower focus; the world outside of the relationships among its three central characters is given scant attention. This leaves the movie with a claustrophobic feel.

I greatly enjoyed Elanne Kwong's performance in "Basic Love"; I found her to have a natural, unaffected appeal that brings her character to vivid life. Rex Ho does a surprisingly good job of revealing his character's inner turmoil. Janice Man was more problematic for me; she is an exceptionally beautiful young woman, but could be more expressive. I wish the film had provided a bigger role for Cheng Pei Pei; she could have added depth and richness to the film's story. I believe that young women in particular will find "Basic Love" to be a moving tale of repressed love.
