Gotham City's Dark Knight returns in the finest cinematic adaptation of DC Comics' iconic superhero ever to grace the screen. Director Christopher Nolan (Memento) delves deep into Batman's origins and emerges with a dark, stylish and thoroughly entertaining film that is easily the best summer blockbuster of 2005.

Christian Bale portrays Bruce Wayne as a deeply tortured and troubled man, who abandons his fortune and his home, including surrogate father figure Alfred the butler (Michael Caine), to wander the Earth, looking for ways to focus his inner demons. After witnessing the murder of his parents at the hands of a street hoodlum, Wayne swears to dedicate his life to wiping the streets of Gotham clean of the crime and evil that are devouring the city.

On his travels, Wayne comes into contact with the mysterious mentor, Ducard (Liam Neeson) who guides and teaches him in the ways of martial arts and deadly combat. In fact, Ducard is a representative for the League Of Shadows, a secret society of vigilantes. Their leader, the enigmatic Ra's Al Ghul (Ken Watanabe), is keen to recruit Wayne into their ranks, but their ultimate goals seem less than honorable and Wayne returns home.

On his return to Gotham, Wayne discovers that the city has sunk to new depths of depravity. Crime boss Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson) has a vice-like grip on the city's authorities, crippling the virtuous few, like District Attorney Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes) and Detective Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman, in possibly the most compassionate role of his career) from doing their jobs. Falcone's reign of terror is helped by demented psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Crane (Cillian Murphy), who is not only releasing crazed criminals back onto the streets, but has his own nefarious agenda.

Bruce Wayne, with the help of Lucius Fox, head of Wayne Enterprises' Applied Sciences Division, sees this as the perfect opportunity to launch his avenging angel alter-ego, Batman, on the scum of Gotham, with truly explosive results.
