In anticipation of the 2008 summer blockbuster
The Dark Knight, DC Comics and Warner Brothers Animation have teamed to produce
Batman: Gotham Knight, a series of six interconnected animated shorts about the Caped Crusader. Each short is written by an acclaimed creator, some new to the character and others veterans of Batman media. Among the lineup are David Goyer, screenwriter for
Batman Begins; Josh Olson, Academy Award-nominated writer of
A History of Violence; four-time Emmy-winner Alan Burnett, a longtime contributor to Batman's animated adventures; and comics creators Greg Rucka and Brian Azzarello.
Each segment of Batman: Gotham Knight is animated in a dynamic anime style by renowned Japanese production houses Madhouse, Studio 4℃, and Production I.G. Kevin Conroy, the fan-favorite voice of Batman/Bruce Wayne for nearly two decades, returns to portray the character, and many popular characters from the Batman mythos, including Commissioner Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth, plus villains Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and Deadshot make appearances. The stories take place between Batman's start as a neophyte crimefighter in Batman Begins and his big-screen return in The Dark Knight, each shedding new light on Batman's one-man crusade against crime as well as his relationships with Gotham City, its people, and its nefarious villains.
The edition of Batman: Gotham Knight comes with the following special features:
Audio commentary from DC Comics Senior Vice President Gregory Novek, acclaimed Batman writer and editor Dennis O'Neil, and voice actor Kevin Conroy
Preview of DC's upcoming Wonder Woman animated film
"Batman and Me, a Devotion to Destiny: the Bob Kane Story", a documentary on Batman creator Bob Kane
"A Mirror for the Bat: The Evil Denizens of Gotham City", a documentary exploring Batman's infamous Rogue's Gallery
Four bonus episodes of Batman: The Animated Series presented by Emmy Award-winning producer and animator Bruce Timm
