After breaking out in Hong Kong with a string of funny kung fu hits, Jackie Chan was backed by Golden Harvest to star in several American movies in the early 1980s, the first of which being Battle Creek Brawl. Written and directed by Robert Clouse who famously made Enter the Dragon and Game of Death, Chan's Hollywood debut featured him in double duty as the central actor and the action director, marketing him internationally as Bruce Lee's heir apparent for the "Kung Fu King" throne.

Set in the 1930s Chicago, the Warner Bros.-Golden Harvest co-production is characterized by Chan's trademark action comedy with a supporting cast populated by well-known actors like Jose Ferrer (Lawrence of Arabia), Lenny Montana (The Godfather), and Japanese actor Mako (Conan the Barbarian). In the film, mob boss Dominici (Jose Ferrer) desperately needs a competent fighter to defeat his rival mob's super killer (H.B. Haggerty) in a brutal fighting contest held in Texas known as the "Battle Creek Brawl". So he forces young martial artist Jerry Kwan (Jackie Chan) to do his bidding by kidnapping his brother's fiancee (Rosalind Chao)....

"Battle Creek Brawl" is set in Chicago in the 1930's, where a youngster named Kuan Wen-Lung has adjusted easily to the American way of life, much to the distress of his traditionalist father. Adding to Wen-Lung's problems with his father are his disinterest in following in the footsteps of his doctor brother and his affection for his uncle who has been instructing Wen-Lung in Kung Fu. Least of Wen-Lung's interests is joining his father in the family restaurant. Lo Pao a Chicago Godfather sees in Wen-Lung a chance to win the upcoming no-holds barred fight set for a small town in Texas: The Battle Creek Brawl, in which contestants will be coming from all over the world. What Lo has on his mind is forcing Wen-Lung to enter the Battle Creek Brawl.
