YesAsia Editorial Description

Directed by the late Fukasaku Kinji, international cult hit Battle Royale is one of the most shocking and controversial films of recent years. Based on a Takami Koushun novel, this violent and visceral film takes a Lord of the Flies scenario to modern Japan, telling a tragically brutal and gut-wrenching story amidst the thrilling carnage and bloodshed. Led by Kitano Takeshi, this landmark film launched the careers of a new class of young stars, including Fujiwara Tatsuya (Death Note), Maeda Aki (Out of this World), Kuriyama Chiaki (Kill Bill), Tsukamoto Takashi (A Song to the Sun), Shibasaki Kou (Sinking of Japan), and Ando Masanobu (Nightmare Detective).

To counter increasing youth violence, the Japanese government has envoked the Battle Royale Act as a warning to the nation's youth. A high school class is unwillingly drafted into a deadly game of survival. Taken to a remote island, the teenagers are each given one weapon and a deadline - kill each other or be killed. Only the winner can leave the island alive.

Product Information

Director: Fukasaku Kinji

The setting is the future, the backdrop is government control. The problem: rebellious teenagers. Japan’s latest work of science fiction takes place only one year after the film was made, in 2002, a time when the stock market has plummeted and unemployment runs rampant. Japan has all but fallen into a terrible chaos, and as for the youth, well, they don’t see much of a future for themselves anymore. They’re response is to get violent, and fast. Never before has the country seen such a mass of teens become so derelict, and so lacking in respect for the authorities. And so the Reform School Act is born, and several junior high students are chosen randomly to be sent to a remote island, where they are coerced into playing a war game with the highest stakes they’ve ever known: life itself. Kitano (Beat Takeshi) is the hardened school instructor who leads these students into “Battle Royale”, for better … or for much, much worse.

Deserves its wild reputation Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I hesitated to watch "Battle Royale" of its description as a kind of 'Lord of the Flies'-style gore-fest. I feared it might be both pretentious and exploitative. I should have trusted director Fukasaku Kinji; his films never failed to entertain. The film's premise is both compelling and absurd: Japan's teenagers have become an uncontrolled, unmotivated bunch of delinquents. In order to weed out the miscreants and create a better, more resourceful bunch of kids, classes of 9th graders one by one are being shipped to an island where each child is given a weapon and each child is strapped with an explosive necklace. They then are released upon the island to slaughter each other for three days. When only one of the children survives, he or she is permitted to return home. Absolute mayhem ensues, with some kids turning into feral beasts and others striving for noble comraderie.

The action never lets up and no one does action better than director Fukasaku. However, what truly sets this violent epic apart is how Fukasaku infuses it with wild humor, often delivered by Kitano Takeshi, in his usual deadpan style. Several of the young actors and actresses playing the high school kids turn in memorable performances, but for me the most memorable is glam gunner girl Shibasaki Kou, a gorgeous, leggy terror. "Battle Royale" may be the most violent movie I'm eager to see again. You won't soon forget it!

JAW DROPPING Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I would give this more than 5 stars if it were possible.
most amazing film u will ever see in the history of asian cinema...something the americans would never ever consider showing...unless its a remake which is what is looking likely with this movie.

this will leave u absolutely speechless but glued to ur seat throughout.
at first glance it just seems like a gory sick cult thriller movie which it is in a way. but another aspect of the film is that its contents actually have a meaning behind it, it's thought-provoking and captivating, making u think what would u do in that given situation.

it takes an issue that is actually occuring in modern day society - younger generation of kids caring less about education and turning to crime, and truenting from school, which is what makes this film particularly powerful

i would recommend this to anyone who wants to see something different from all the other typical films coming out of hollywood

Great storyline Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
When I first decided to watch Battle Royale, it was because I heard there was a lot of blood and gore in this movie. But after seeing it, I realize it's much more than just that. There's good character development and humor in the way the teacher acts like this whole competition is perfectly normal. Would you kill your classmates to live?

A must-see. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie is a must-see for everyone. Yes, it is somewhat of a blood-fest because of the killing, but it's more than that. It has a solid storyline, no questions asked. You really get to see the lives of these teens and through what goes on in the battlefield. Alliances are made and friends are betrayed. This movie will make you go through many highs and lows. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
