BR isn't supposed to be funny
|
Well I think there are 2 types of people who have liked battle royale 1: On one side, the ones who just found it funny to see young students killing each other in many funny ways. If that's your case, I don't think you'll like this sequel much, and you may even don't like it at all. On the other side, the ones who liked BR1 because it was a great idea and an interesting thing to see the different manners people would react if they were forced to kill all of their friends to survive. That's indeed a good reflection about life. If you liked battle royale 1 for that reason, I think you'll like BR2 too. To sum up, BR2 doesn't provide great "funny" deaths and kills, as the first one did. But instead it has some even more interesting discussions about the aim of a life... Now choose your side : losers or winners ? just kidding ;o) |

ok as an action movie
| definately not as good as Battle Royale 1, the action is decent, but it's violence without a purpose, unlike the first movie. |

A disappointment
|
When I went to see Battle Royale 2 at the cinemas I had the highest expectations for the film as for the upcoming several weeks I had been bombarded by massive posters hanging off buildings in Akihabara, Shinjuku and Shibuya advertizing the film, not to mention the shocking sight of Japanese highschoolers walking around with novelty BR necklaces. Well, the quiet anti-hero of the first film, Nanahara, is back and in the space of about two years he's managed to recruit a large group of Japanese students and BR survivors, construct an island fort and establish firm ties with some terrorist cells in Afghanistan. The opening scenes of the film are identical to those of the first BR and are therefore very, very boring. What's worse is Riki Takeuchi's acting is poor and needlessly over the top, not to mention annoying at times. From then on, the new group of students are sent to an island where we are presented with almost 20 minutes of footage which looks like it was picked up off the cutting room floor of 'Saving Private Ryan'. The movie just gets worse from this point. I'd like to add that it is not Kinji Fukasaku's film, it is his son's, Kenta's. The original Battle Royale had everything that the sequel doesn't have; a believable cast, a striking storyline and contemporary Japanese cinematography. In Battle Royale, every death had an impact on the audience. In BR2, students get killed by the dozen as they go about their duties as professionally as veteran military soldiers. Highly unlikely. BR2 was Kenta Fukasaku's chance to make a sloppy American war movie with soldiers and then have it do reasonably well in the box office due to its predecessor's success. It's funny that Kenta Fukasaku did a lot of script work for Battle Royale 1 and then did so poorly in BR2. I guess it's because he had a best selling novel to write BR1 off, whilst all he had to write BR2 off were a bunch of WWII flicks and B-Grade shoot 'em ups. Overall, the action scenes are quite boring at times and it is a huge step back from the first. I know that I will think twice before going to see BR3 (if there ever is one). |

2nd time around not as good :(
| BR2 (no matter how much hype you may have heard) is NOT as good as BR1. The magic that made BR1 so good is pretty much lost here. Instead of being a gritty, student vs student romp with very emotional scenes, the students in BR2 are brought to a "boot camp" style building, and put up against terrorists . Ho hum. Sure, the students are picked off one by one, but you don't connect with any of them like you did in BR1, which is the main reason why the sequel is less then average. Worth watching just to satisfy curiosity, but I will take BR1 over 2 any day. |

Too much talking in this movie!!!
|
After watching BRI which I thought was quite good, BRII was a must-see! I wasn't expecting it to be as good as the first one, but this really is rubbish. The first 10-15 minutes is very much like BRI, but then the story starts to develop (or not would be more accurate) and drag... I mean really drag with lots of talking and too much of the same type of action. Not my type of movie... |

kevin brighting?
| BRII i admit was not what i expected but if it was teh same as BR then it would be stupid. like the story itself didnt focus on the whole battle royale concept of people killing each other but this time to go capture someone, if it was like the first the plot would be dull and un original. kevin brigting u obviously did not understand the movie and u probably jus made yurself the "turkey of 2004." if your goin to watch this movie just because u thought it was going to be like the first one, then i wouldnt recommend it. its more of a continuation...... |

A massive disappointment
|
If you're reading this review, then it's probably because you loved BR1. You won't love the follow-up. It's dull, unoriginal and has nothing to recommend it. Poor effects, almost the same plot as the last film but this time we have a cast who substitute SHOUTING for acting. This film is rubbish. |

2004's first turkey
| All the inventiveness that made BR1 such a winner is thrown to the dogs in this appalling 2nd helping. This is dull. The many CGI effects are obvious (and therefore poor) and the plot is EXACTELY the same as the first film same one small caveat - this time our victims are paired off - so if one half gets killed the other half finds their neckbrace going off and therfore gets their heads blown off. End of story. |

Flawed, but worth watching more than once.
|
Unfortunately, BRII doesn't live up to the legendary status of its predecessor, and many strongly dislike it upon first watching it. But BRII improves with multiple viewings as one starts to look past the flaws (the muddled politics, the bogged-down middle, Shugo Oshinari's irritating one-note performance) and sees what works in the film (subtle characterizations, relentless action, Ai Maeda's performance as Shiori Kitano, the daughter of the teacher from the first movie). My one piece of advice is to drop any preconceptions you have that this is BR all over again. Its structure is different (plot-driven instead of character-driven, which is why most of the multitude characters don't get developed), its theme is different (it is, at heart, a war movie), and its message is different (we need to take responsibility for our choices and actions). This movie assumes you've learned your lessons from the first BR; it's time to move on to something new, and not merely rehash what came before. |

Dull

Battle Royale is one of my favourite movies - and definitely my favourite Japanese movie. Needless to say - I was excited about seeing Battle Roylae II even though I had been told it was not as good as the first. Something that was made evident by its initial box office success in Japan followed by a very fast fall off at the box office once workd spread about the movie. Anyway, I found the characters in this movie to be far less likeable than those in the first and there was also some extreme over acting. One instersting aspect of the movie was the strong anti American feeling throughout. This isn't portrayed consistently and I am not sure why it is there. Is it a statement by the producer or is it simply taking hold of the strong anti American feeling throughout Japan at the moment. This movie is worth a viewing - but don't expect to be captured by it in the same way as you were the first movie. |
