May 25, 2009 Cute and endearing story Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
but very disappointing picture quality : lack of sharpness and brightness, and even sometimes slightly blurred. But once again, the producers have chosen the cheapest option : a DVD 5 - 3.8 GB disc. What can one expect of a 3.8 GB encoding ? It is wholly inadequate, specially as most of the movie is made against a background of vast and moving landscapes (waves and beaches). Just imagine watching someone surfing on a big breaking wave on a badly crenelated picture !...

I wish I had known that before buying it, as I probably would not have bought it then !

Why is it that "Hong Kong Version" DVDs are so often of such very bad technical quality ? Despite such a hefty price as for this one ? For half that price, I bought in England a DVD copy of "Local Boys" (another movie about surfing) with immaculate quality.

People should mention the DVD technical quality in their reviews, as watching a good movie on a bad DVD is nearly as frustrating as watching a bad movie !!!

May 22, 2009 This movie is spoilt by its very bad DVD transfer Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
I was much looking forward to this movie, but the technical quality of the present release is quite disappointing : why would the producer choose, in this time of modern technology, to encode this movie on a DVD 5 - 4 GB disc, with the resulting lack of sharpness and brightness ?

It is like watching the movie through a milky filter. The picture is flat and boring. In fact, the transfer is so inadequate that it reminds me of cheap DVDs of the late 90's. This movie deserved better. Shame on the producers and distributors for always going for the tacky option !

I had hoped for a "Dragon Tiger Gate" type of movie, which had a perfect picture quality. This one is very far from it. Why do producers shoot themselves (and their actors) in the foot by overlooking such an obvious element : make the movie technically pleasant to watch, so that the actors can have the best chance to show their skills and succeed ...

It is sad for the boys who deserved better help from their producer !...

    November 8, 2008 A big letdown ... Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
The film itself is just average, certainly nothing memorable.

But what annoyed me most what the terribly bad technical quality of this DVD.

The picture was crenelated and striated, the menu did not work properly, the user's warnings were extremely long and what is really unacceptable, there were THREE trailers at the beginning of the movie that could not be avoided.

I think it is dishonest for a publisher to oblige a viewer to watch trailers that he/she does not choose to watch ...

I shall never again buy DVDs by Taisheng Multimedia. It's been more than twenty years that DVDs exist, but this one takes you back to the beginning when the technology was not yet fully understood or controlled by DVD publishers.

Taisheng should be ashamed to market products of such bad quality.

September 3, 2007 English subtitles Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This is an excellent movie with a very endearing main character. The picture quality is average, mostly good enough to watch, but with a few parts quite blurred and grainy. I do not know why, but the Taiwan versions are often not as good as the Hong Kong versions with regards to picture quality. And the version I bought (DVD Taiwan) DID HAVE ENGLISH SUBTITLES despite what is said on the product page. This was an excellent surprise, because I nearly did not buy it when I saw the warning by YesAsia that it not have English subtitles ...

    June 25, 2007 A big letdown Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
I quite liked Vanness Wu in his other movies and I was looking forward to this one. But I am much disappointed. The storyline is completely uninteresting. Some fights are pleasant to watch, but they do not really flow. And the worst fault of this movie is the disastrous DVD transfer. Despite being a DVD9 published barely two weeks ago (June 2007), the picture quality is worse than in some DVD5 from a decade ago. What a shame that Taiseng should put so little pride in the technical aspect of its production. This DVD is definitely a big letdown.

November 7, 2005 Mixed feelings Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
This is a very endearing movie, but it is a great shame that the transfer on DVD is so bad. The image is often blurred and the dark parts are nearly impossible to watch. And the subtitles are burnt into the picture, which means that one cannot desactivate them. The quality of the image is so bad that I believe that the DVD was made from a VHS tape and not from the original film media. In fact, I have had a VHS copy of this movie for many years, and the quality of the image on my VHS tape is ten times better than the one on the DVD ! I am very disappointed, because I bought the DVD in the hope of having a cristal clear copy of this beautiful movie ... If it was for the movie only, I would give it a ten, but the technical quality deserves a zero, so I give it five with much regret, as the movie itself is absolutely great.
