YesAsia Editorial Description

Newcomer Lee Gye Byeok makes his feature film directorial debut with this contemporary update on the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast! In the inversely titled Beast And The Beauty, Shin Min A (Sad Movie, A Bittersweet Life, and Volcano High) plays Hae Ju, an attractive young woman who remains upbeat about life despite losing her eyesight many years ago. For three years, she's been in a relationship with her faithful boyfriend, Dong Gun (Ryoo Seung Bum, from Crying Fist and Arahan). However, Dong Gun panics when he learns that Hae Ju is about to regain her eyesight thanks to a miraculous operation. It seems that Dong Gun has been lying to her all this time about his appearance. In truth, he is not the attractive man he's claimed to be, but is instead a man suffering from a serious facial scar.

Ashamed of both his ruse and his appearance, the frightened Dong Gun takes desperate measures to remedy the situation. Instead of explaining himself to Hae Ju, he decides to hide himself away, leaving a message claiming that he's headed to Hawaii. Meanwhile, his girlfriend crosses paths with the handsome Jun Ha (Kim Kang Woo, The Aggressives, Springtime), who finds himself attracted to the beautiful Hae Ju. While Jun Ha pursues Hae Ju, she continues to wait for Dong Gun to return. But will he come back in time to save their love? See for yourself in this charming romantic comedy that features standout performances from Ryoo Seung Beom and Shin Min Ah and also features An Kil Gang (Taegukgi), Ahn Sang Tae (The Art of Seduction), and Ham Eun Jeong (Madeline).

Professional Review of "Beast And The Beauty (DVD) (Taiwan Version)"

March 11, 2008

This professional review refers to Beast and the Beauty (Single Disc Edition)
I like Ryoo Seung Bum, he's a very talented actor, and he has an engaging charm in the right role. In Arahan, for example, his gormlessly likeable character made it clear he wasn't the standard Saviour Of The World, regardless of his special skills. And in Crying Fist, he gave a damn fine showing as a bundle of unresolved tensions always on the verge of exploding.

But you’d never call him handsome. True, he's not a beast, but he's pretty homely. As if to underscore his beastliness, though, he’s a voice actor who specializes in anime voice-overs. Well, anime roar-overs: he's uniquely gifted at making the monster noises so vital to good anime. And it's his monstrous abilities that win the fair maiden, because who after all could resist a man who can roar so convincingly?

So the combination of acting talent, mutt-boy looks, and energetic charm make him a fine casting choice for the role of doting boyfriend. And dote he does: in fact, the relationship is pretty sweet all round. He is charming, attentive, and ever-so-humbly grateful for the good fortune that dropped a beautiful girl almost in his lap, while she is quirky, independent, and quite definitely attached to her favorite monster.

Which makes this rather unusual, for a rom-com. The couple are already together, they're clearly happy, so where's the story? Well, the story is that she's blind, and he's told a teensy white lie about his looks. Okay, he’s told some complete porkies about his looks. Instead of describing someone with a face for radio, he describes Jun Ha, his best friend from school days, who's a classic looker. Of course, the lie has to come unravelled sooner or later, and he deals with this in the manner you'd expect from someone who's best described as "has a lovely personality". That is, he panics.

So as Jun Ha pursues Hae Ju, Dong Gun goes to ever more extravagant lengths to put off meeting Hae Ju. The stated excuse, that he's getting a facial scar removed, is a bit lame, given that the scar is fairly small anyway, but it does provide a few minor laughs. Ryoo handles it capably, though, making Dong Gun believably lacking in self-confidence, portraying an ordinary bloke who feels he can't compete with the model-like looks and suave demeanor of Jun Ha.

And there's another unusual factor here: Jun Ha, the threat to the relationship, is not a devious and immoral schemer, as he would be in so many other rom-coms. Which makes the conflict in this film more convincing, because in another setting Jun Ha would be the leading man without a single alteration to his character. So Dong Gun, our beastly hero, is actually competing against a fairy-tale prince. Tough gig.

Okay, it's not War and Peace. It's a simple romantic comedy, which limits the scope considerably. But if you want a bit of entertaining fluff played by a strong cast, you'll probably enjoy this.

Love is blind, isn't it? Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "Beast and the Beauty", Ryoo Seung Bum plays homely Dong Gun, who supplies vocal sound effects for cheesy monster movies. On his way home from work, pretty blind pianist Hae Ju (Shin Min Ah), mistaking Dong Gun's car for a taxi, enters its back seat. Not wishing to turn the beauty away, Dong Gun drives her home. He then begins the practice of picking her up each day when she leaves work, pretending always to be a taxi driver. By the time Hae Ju figures out what is happening, the two have become great friends and she has begun to fall in love with him. Dong Gun acts as Hae Ju's eyes by explaining to her the beauty of their surroundings, often stretching the truth to make the world seem more pleasing. Among his fibs, Dong Gun lies about his own appearance, persuading Hae Ju that he's quite a handsome guy.

Jun Ha (Kim Kang Woo), one of Dong Gun's old schoolmates who now is a dashing prosecuting attorney, rescues Hae Ju from gangsters. He, too, is smitten by her beauty. Hae Ju, however, discourages his advances; her heart belongs only to Dong Gun. When Hae Ju has successful eye transplant surgery, Dong Gun panics -- he fears that she never could love a man of his very plain appearance. He avoids her and tries to steer her to the studly Jun Ha. Will he squander his hope for love or will Hae Ju remain true to him?

It's a promising rom-com premise played well by an appealing cast. While the story flags in its second half by becoming overly repetitious, "Beast and the Beauty" supplies more than enough comedy and romance to be well worth a look.

AFTER WATCHING SHIM MIN-A IN "ALOVE TO KILL" WHICH IS A FULL DRAMA..IT IS GOOD TO GET A BREAK WATCHING HER IN THIS GOOD COMEDY MOVIE. SHE COMPLIMENTED WELL WITH THE ACTING OF THE LEADING MAN, MISSED HIS NAME BUT HE IS THE STAR OF ARAHAN. HIS NOT REALLY A BEAST LOOK-A-LIKE IN THIS FILM, ALTHOUGH SHE IS WAY BEAUTIFUL FOR HIS TYPE. GOOD ACTING, GREAT COMEDY, GREAT LOVE STORY. WATCH IT.

This movie is kind a movie that u can really tell the ending after u see the prologue. Anyway i really like how the movie got packaged, though the ending wasn't the one that i really want to see (how the beast ends it, it is so not romantic. LOL), but i do think it's worth the money, i really enjoy every single thing on the movie. I really recommend this movie!! ^^
