YesAsia Editorial Description
Directed by Chung Shu Kai (Feel 100% 2003) and produced by the formidable duo of Wong Jing and Eric Tsang, Beauty and the 7 Beasts is a raucous blast-to-the-past remake of the 1970s film Lucky Seven. The titular beauty is newcomer and Wong Jing protege Natalie Meng, while the "beasts" are comedy regulars Eric Tsang, Nat Chan, Gordon Lam (Election), Eddie Cheung (Exiled), Chin Kar Lok, Lam Chi Sing, and TVB star Wong Cho Lam. In addition to a fabulously pastel set and retro wardrobe, Beauty and 7 Beasts good-naturedly channels the comedies of the 70s with exaggerated dialogue, winking wordplay, episodic gags, and even musical numbers. Viewers also get double doses of sitcom silliness with some "film within a film" segments, and Wong Tin Lam appropriately cameoing as a director. To complete the family affair, Wong Jing's daughter Wong Chi Hom also appears in the film.
Movie star Teddy (Eric Tsang) made a career out of playing Casanova, but lately he's been down on work and cash. To help pay the bills, his assistant Wendy (Jo Koo) finds five desperate guys who are willing to pay to learn girl-chasing skills from the master. Adding to the full house is Teddy's long-lost daughter Pearl (Natalie Meng), who shows up at the doorstep and attracts the unwanted attentions of smarmy actor Rocky (Nat Chan). Teddy and Rocky have a rivalry that goes back many moons, and hijinks ensue when they get cast in the same movie. Rocky may have the upperhand, but Teddy and his five disciples have some pranks of their own to cook up.

Teddy (Eric Tsang), nicknamed "Heart-throb", was one of those guys who were never out of a romantic relationship, but always got rid of the responsibility that went with it. What he didn't know was that 22 years ago, he had a child with an ex-girlfriend and now the child has grown to become a beautiful woman named Pearl (Meng Yao).
Teddy was out of income but his secret admirer Wendy (Jo Koo) came up with a plan. She found five desperate single men who wants to learn the trick of getting women from Teddy. The five men are The Preacher (Chin Ka Lok), Tony (Cheung Siu Fai), Bruce (Wong Cho Lam), Broke-back (Lam Ka Tung) and Casanova (Lam Tsz Sin). The ploy worked nicely, until Pearl's arrival and Teddy's long-time rival, Rocky's (Ah Nat) bad intentions.

"Beauty and the 7 Beasts" starts out simply silly, with lots of dopey bathroom humor, but winds up being hilarious. Set in the early 1970s, with extravagant wardrobes and set decoration to match that technicolor era, "Beauty" stars Eric Tsang as a has-been actor locked in a rivalry with his frequent co-star Nat Chan. Tsang is surrounded by a peculiar army of hangers-on, including a long-suffering secretary who loves him, several sexy stewardesses eager to leap into the sack with him, a gorgeous daughter he never knew he had, and five geeky guys who have paid Tsang to teach them how to become pop stars. Tsang and Chan are hilarious throughout, and you can't take your eyes off of beauteous newcomer Meng Yao, as Tsang's daughter. One suspects that the actors had a great time performing in this wacky comedy, as the scenes get wilder and wilder as the movie progresses. Knowledge of Hong Kong movie history helps to get some of the jokes, but even those who know nothing about old Shaw Bros. films will have fun watching "Beauty and the 7 Beasts". I recommend it highly. |
