Ge Lan deserves better
|
What a mess! A number of criticisms may be made of this DVD presentation of "Because of Her." First, the DVD presents a terrible fullscreen pan-and-scan version of the movie that frequently chops off the top of people's heads and occasionally leaves characters entirely out of a scene. Second, there is a three minute stretch in the movie during which the color goes haywire and the movie oscillates between everything being tinted green and everything being tinted yellow. Third, while the story has a good kernel of an idea, it is poorly executed in this script. Fourth, the lighting is terrible in some scenes. Fifth, the dancers seem underrehearsed in some scenes. Sixth, the set decoration is amateurish in some scenes. Seventh, the cinematography is clumsy in some scenes. Eighth, on a number of occasions, just when the story is starting to get interesting, the flow is interrupted by a 10-minute musical number that destroys the dramatic tension. Ninth, the actor chosen to play the romantic lead opposite Ge Lan in the climactic musical number can neither sing nor dance. Tenth, oh, why bother? You get the idea; this is one ineptly made movie. And, to top it all off, the ending is just ridiculous. I rate "Because of Her" as highly as I do because Ge Lan works her tail off trying to salvage something viewable out of this mess. She is the only reason to watch this movie. |
