Beethoven Virus (DVD) (Multi-audio) (English Subtitled) (MBC TV Drama) (Malaysia Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Korea's answer to Nodame Cantabile (though with decidedly less silliness), MBC's hit 2008 drama Beethoven Virus is set in the competitive world of classical music. Returning from his award-winning performance in The Great White Tower, Kim Myung Min stars as a stubborn conducting maestro whose life and music begin to change when he encounters a beautiful violinist played by Korean television's newest darling Lee Ji Ah (The Legend) and a trumpet prodigy played by go-to heartthrob Jang Keun Suk (Hong Gil Dong). Classical music is their passion, their dream, and their life, but neither romance nor crescendos come easy for those bitten with the Beethoven Virus.

Kang Gun Woo (Kim Myung Min) may be Korea's top conductor, but his status is eclipsed by his inability to get along with anybody. Despite his great talents, his notoriously difficult personality and refusal to compromise even an inch eventually put him out of work in his country. Years after leaving Korea, he is invited back by violinist Ru Mi (Lee Ji Ah) who is organizing a city orchestra on very limited resources. Formed by a ragtag group of amateurs and second-stringers, this budding orchestra has heart, but they're short on cash and talent. Both the conductor and the players are in for a shock when they meet, none the least reluctant trumpet player Kang Gun Woo (Jang Keun Suk), who holds a childhood grudge against the self-righteous conductor with the same name as him.

Beautiful and Inspiring!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I must admit I was a little bit late catching up with the Korean Wave although it has already hit our shores pretty much several years ago starting with shows like Lovers in Paris which I watched mainly (albeit sporadically) because it featured beautiful scenes of France. I'm not really a fan of melodramas especially those glacially-paced ones. Heck, even Grey's Anatomy makes me nauseous sometimes.

A couple of months ago, I tried watching Beethoven Virus and I was instantly hooked. I used to play the piano as a kid and I love listening to classical music when solving calculus problems or writing essays in the pretext that it would somehow make me smarter. Initially, I would just watch the show's rehearsal and orchestral clips (their renditions of Gabriel's Oboe, William Tell Overture, and Beethoven's Ninth symphony are a must-see!!) and then switch the remote to other channels during the drama scenes. Eventually, I had to watch whole episodes in order to understand the emotion and tension among and between the orchestra members. I'm very glad I decided to give this Korean TV series a try because not only did it re-introduce me to classical music but I got to understand the dynamics of how the orchestra works, how it functions as a single unit albeit the multitude instruments, and the indispensable role each member has to play in order to make harmony and beautiful music together. And I must mention that the score itself is captivating and simply gorgeous. I also like the fact that the maestro (played wonderfuly by Kim Myung Min) would give little lectures about classical music. His sardonic dry wit and sharp tongue would usually upset his orchestra members but this is a man who cares about his orchestra deeply and passionately. The depiction of classical music and the lives and struggles of its musicians to find their place once more in this pop-dominated world which has seemingly rendered them obsolete is equally heartfelt and inspiring. Of course, no Korean drama would exist without some form of romantic tension between the leads but I like the fact that the writers made it sweet and simple although the resolution of the aforementioned romance during the finale made me swoon (hee.. hee..)

I'm really thankful that Beethoven Virus has re-introduced me to Korean drama. I'm now halfway through Queen Seon Deok and I'm thinking of watching other more Korean series after I'm done. 100+ stars!! :)

Must see drama...Wow on acting... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is for music lovers & Korean drama lovers... The main actor Kim Myung Min, what can you say about
him but how great of actor he is (every dramas & movies he has been in, he wins major awards!). One would think that he actually studied to be a conductor, the movements, the expressions and his acting is by far
amazing!

I think Jang Geun Suk & Lee Ji Ah along with all the cast did outstanding job in their roles. The older cello player, her name escapes me at the moment, she played a concert pianist, mom of Bae Yong Jun's role in Winter Sonata. I thought she actually played cello but she said she studied by watching mostly DVDs on cello players. Her movements & expressions as she played looked so real that it fooled me to think she actually palyed the instrament.

I watched this drama in 2 days since I couldn't stop watching.

The OST is very good...there are several for the drama...the special addition has Jang Geun Suk singing on the 1st cd, last track. He has very nice voice. Enjoy...Aloha
