Three single women experience the joys and hardships of urban living in the romantic comedy Between Tears and Laughter, produced by the popular Cathay Studios. Wang Lai is a divorced woman with an eight year-old son, who lives in an apartment representing three different generations of women. Aside from Wang Lai, the apartment houses Li Mei, a novelist still grieving for her dead lover, and Kitty Ding Hao, a young, feisty office lady. A gentleman pen pal (Qiao Hong) arrives from Singapore to visit Kitty, but he instead makes overtures towards the older, more mature Li Mei. Complicating matters is Kitty's cousin Tien Ching, who's upset because he feels he has some claim to Kitty's heart. Meanwhile, Wang Lai's husband (Yeung Chi Hing) reinserts himself into her life, but she's more concerned with her son, who's in the hospital with polio. Finding themselves as comrades and competitors, the three women must find the personal strength to move forward in their separate, yet intertwined lives. Director Tang Huang (Her Tender Heart) brings pleasant humor and a sensitive storytelling hand to Between Tears and Laughter, an endearing film that accurately represents the popular female-centric films from Cathay Studios!

　　都市處境喜劇一向是「電懋」最擅長的類型，《玉樓三鳳》特別的地方，卻是以三個都會單身女子共租一個玩代住宅單位為題，很可能是香港電影裡最早描述單身女性獨立的作品之一，再次反映出「電懋」對社的敏銳觸覺。三名女角（失婚婦人王萊、曾經滄海的女作家李湄、任性妄為的OL丁皓），分別代表了老、中、青三代，她們的感情糾葛，在片中都有著細膩傳神的刻劃。本片由「亞洲影展」最佳編劇汪榴照執筆，配合著導演唐煌（《玉女私情》、《雲裳艷后》、《六月新娘》）自然流暢的鏡頭調度，有著水準以上的成績。

　　Urban romantic comedy has always been a genre in which MP&GI excelled. What is special about Between Tears and Laughter is its subject matter: the joys and sorrows of three single women who shared a modern apartment in Hong Kong, a "phenomenon" that was quite unusual, if not rare, for females in the early sixties. The three protagonists, played by Wang Lai (a divorced woman with her eight-year-old son), Helen Li Mei (a lovelorn novelist) and Kitty Ding Hao (a capricious and headstrong office lady), represent three generations of females. Written with wit and intelligence by the award-winning Wang Liuzhou, and directed with great humour and subtle mise-sen-scene by Tang Huang (Her Tender Heart, Sister Long Legs), the film is arguably a minor classic of MP&GI.
