Written by Raymond Wong and directed by Wu Ma, Beware of Pickpockets (1981) is notably the second production from '80s Hong Kong movie powerhouse Cinema City. Dean Shek and Karl Maka (also the producer of the film), the comic duo of the fledging company's inaugural release Laughing Times, star in this hilarious and heartwarming period comedy filled with musical and kung fu elements. The film's musical sequences are notably the works of famous composer Joseph Koo and dance choreographer Lau Siu Ming.
Upright policeman Bau (Karl Maka) is ordered by his superior (Wu Ma) to catch the crafty thief Dor (Dean Shek), who always manages to go one step ahead of them, a fact that deeply irritates Bau. Dor actually only steals from the heartless rich people to help the poor, and being an orphan himself, he has taken in seven homeless street kids to live with him in a rundown church. Dor intends to spend the stolen money on an old mansion and turn it into an orphanage. Now the deadline for the payment of the last installment is upon him, yet Bau is stalking him aggressively...

Karl Maka, a faithful and honest constable, was ordered to arrest Dean Shek, a pickpocket. However, each time he was caught, he was released by lack of evidence. Although Dean was a tricky man, the monies he stole from those dirty rich people were spent on the seven poor orphans with whom he lived together in an old shady church. Dean had an intention to buy a house where he could keep more orphans. He therefore used part of the monies to pay by instalment to a landlord for the house. In view of the pressure from his officer, Mak had to follow Dean wherever he went in order to stop him to do his criminal job, and thus he had no money to pay for the last instalment to the landlord. He was given two days extension otherwise the house would be sold to other party......
