Shaw Brothers managed to tell a powerful tale in only 88 minutes in this superb huangmei film. Only Lin Dai had the presence and charisma to deliver such a strong, yet vulnerable, regal, yet sympathetic, performance. The music, costuming, set decoration, and cinematography are sumptuous and beautiful throughout this film gem. Very, very highly recommended for a general audience. |
