Long before Lust, Caution, Infernal Affairs, and Hero, acclaimed Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai paid his dues on television, starring in many classic dramas that are still fondly remembered by Hong Kong audiences. After graduating from TVB's acting classes in 1982, Leung quickly rose to stardom and became one of the studio's top actors in the 1980s through hit series like Police Cadet and Duke of Mount Deer. His first proper leading role came in 1983 with the touching drama Beyond the Rose Garden, co-starring popular actress and host Money Lo and veterans Louise Lee and Patrick Tse. Fans can also look out for faces in the crowd like Stephen Chow, Francis Ng, and Bobby Au-Yeung, all newcomers at the time.

Raised in a Macau monastery, Ma Tin Yau (Tony Leung) grew up in the dark about his family background. Though his relationship with nun Hong Nei (Louise Lee) is as close as mother and son, he can't help being curious about his origins. After turning 19, Tin Yau goes to Hong Kong in search for his birth parents. There he encounters and falls in love with a girl (Money Lo), but is devastated when he realizes she might be his sister. Tin Yau returns to Macau in such a state of despair that Hong Nei finally breaks down and tells him the truth about his parents. Can Tin Yau overcome the tragedy of twenty years ago, and repair relations with the family he never had?

孤兒馬天佑(梁朝偉)在澳門的修道院長大，一直得康妮修女(李司棋)悉心照顧，當完成大學後，便獨自到香港追查自己身世。

佑到港後認識了退休醫生馮宗(關海山)，宗接待佑到家中暫住。佑因而認識了王阿香(盧敏儀)，並對香動了真情，但因誤會香是同父異母的妹妹，所以一直不為所動，反之，佑的好友龍(嚴秋華)卻對香主動示愛，令三人關係飽受煎熬…

最後，妮終向佑剖白他的身世，讓佑得悉生父是風流不羈及不近人情的馮約禮(謝賢)，在苦惱相認一事時，佑突然被人綁票…

Orphan MA TIN-YAU (Leung Chiu Wai) was brought up in a convent in Macau by a nun called HONG NI (Lee Sze Kee). After being admitted to university, YAU decides to come to Hong Kong to look for his biological parents.

Upon his arrival in Hong Kong, YAU gets to know retired doctor FUNG CHUNG (Kwan Hoi San) and is asked to put up at his place. There YAU encounters a girl called WONG AH-HEUNG (Lo Man Yee). Despite his deep affection for HEUNG, YAU has hesitation in the relationship in which of HEUNG may be his half-sister. In the meantime, YAU’s buddy LUNG (Yim Chau Wah) begins to woo HEUNG and the three are soon caught up in a bitter love triangle.

NI finally reveals to YAU his identity and the lad is shocked to learn that he is actually the son of the cold-hearted playboy FUNG YEUK-LAI (Tse Yin). As YAU is still wondering whether he should be reunited with LAI, he is suddenly kidnapped…
