Martial arts matinee idol Chen Kuan Tai becomes The Big Boss of Shanghai in this solid 1979 kung fu odyssey, which recalls shades of his classic appearances in Challenge of the Masters and Executioners from Shaolin. Chen was one of the first true martial artists to make the leap to movie stardom, and The Big Boss of Shanghai (which Chen also directed) understandably devotes much of its screen time to exacting exhibitions of its star's physical talents. Fans of Bruce Lee, Lau Kar Leung, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen will appreciate Chen's technique - as both a martial artist, and a filmmaker.

After accidentally killing a triad boss, best friends Wong and Cheung decide to make a new life for themselves in Shanghai. By virtue of his superb fighting skills, Wong quickly establishes himself as an underworld gang leader in the city's French quarter. Jealous of his buddy's success, Cheung throws his lot in with the gangs operating in the British-controlled sector of town. The two friends become bitter enemies as their respective factions prepare for a confrontation that can only end in Wong or Cheung's demise.

One day, Wong and Cheung accidentally killed one of the gangsters. They fled to Shanghai. The prosperity of Shanghai was a shock to them, Wong decided to build himself up. Through his wisdom and martial art skills, many other gangsters turned to be his follower. He became a reputable big boss of Shanghai under the French leased territories. Meanwhile, Cheung was jealous of Wong's growing power, in despite of their relationship, he wanted to split up. Tao, who defeated by Wong, persuaded Cheung to go for another big boss, Lam, of the British leased territories. Lam decided to kill Wong because of his growing power. After a vigorous struggle, Wong proved himself to be the winner and deserved to be the only big boss of Shanghai.
