"The H-Man" is an underrated film noir gem, laced with hard-bitten cops, snarling gangsters, gorgeous dames, cool jazz, scantily-clad dancers, and, oh yes, deadly green slime. The movie begins with the mysterious disappearance of a gangster involved in the illegal drug trade. The gangster seemingly evaporates on a city street, leaving behind nothing but his clothes. The cops hound his beautiful girlfriend, nightclub singer Aika Chikako (Shirakawa Yumi), believing that she must know of the gangster's whereabouts. Poor Chikako also is threatened by a rival gangster who believes he has been double-crossed by the missing thug. Coming to Chikako's defense is a noble scientist who surmises that there is a connection between the gangster's disappearance and strange events occurring on a fishing boat, a connection that leads the cops to conclude that the scientist has taken leave of his senses. What the scientist and his colleagues have discovered is that nuclear radiation, like that generated by the explosion of a hydrogen bomb, can cause animals and humans to morph into a living green slime that then feeds on other living creatures. The slime now is attacking a Tokyo neighborhood and the only way to combat it is burn it with intense heat by pouring gasoline into the sewer system and setting it alight. However, the rival gangster has dragged Chikako down to those sewers in search of his stash of illegal drugs! Can Chikako survive the thug, the slime, and the fire??? "The H-Man" not only oozes naughty noirish atmosphere, but also is haunted by Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the fire-bombing of Tokyo. I found it to be frightfully enjoyable! |
