YesAsia Editorial Description
Acclaimed film director Yon Fan (Colour Blossoms, Peony Pavillion) explores the controversial issue of homosexuality in Hong Kong culture with Bishonen, an arthouse film that features an all-star cast and was an official selection to the 1998 Toronto Film Festival. House of Fury's Stephen Fung plays Jet, an arrogant male prostitute who falls hard for Sam (Daniel Wu of New Police Story), a straight-laced, seemingly heterosexual cop with a knockout girlfriend (Shu Qi of The Transporter). But as Jet's feelings grow, he is patently unaware that Sam harbors some buried secrets of his own, which are connected not only to Jet's old colleague Ching (Jason Tsang), but also to a pop star teenybopper idol named K.S. (Terence Yin). Along with Wong Kar-Wai's critically acclaimed Happy Together, Bishonen was one of the first Hong Kong films to deal directly with homosexuality in an explicit manner. Thanks to photographer-turned-director Yon Fan's deft handling of the material, Bishonen provides a heartfelt look at Hong Kong's gay subculture while providing the audience with a unique love story all its own!

A very touching love story
A very touching love story

This movie is filled with hot young male actors with its fair share of steamy love scenes. But if you are looking for a light hearted romantic comedy, this is not the movie for you. Bishonen is a very touching love story. As a heterosexual audience, I easily identified with the homosexual characters. I felt their pain as I watched them struggle in the name of love. Indeed, the story is more about love than sexuality. It reminded me of Happy Together starring Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung. If you liked that movie, there is a good chance you will like this one too. |

What a Good Story

I watched this movie very recently and I must say it is one of the best love stories I've ever seen. Despite this movie has main characters that are homosexuals, the romance is so well transmitted that you won't even put the "gay theme" in priority. In other words, it's a movie to be admired not only by the gay public, because the social and psychological sides of the characters are much more explorated and the sex scenes aren't explicit, which reforces this sensation. The story has a mix of suspense and love, with good quantities of what is HK's situation about the homosexual people. The sad end that finishes the movie also increases and retracts a lot more of the dramatic circumstances. If you haven't seen it yet, try it because it will worth it. |

Bishonen is an enlightening look into the gay world of Hong Kong. The cinematography and storyline keep one's interest. Daniel Wu and Stephen Fong give excellent performances. Although the ending is tragic, I enjoyed the film and am glad to buy the DVD. Coco Lee's themesong is very touching as well. |

I agree with LYC - Denver. Why must gay movies ends with a sad ending? But overall, I truly fell in love with that movie...Terrific...Marvellous... I feel that even gay movies can have a happy ending as well...the ending is so sad...I even cry... |

Two Thumbs up! the actors gives excellent performance. It moves me, the story is very real in a society where people doesn't understand their existence. it draws closer to the fact that love is creatd not by words but by feelings not by human but by hearts moreso it is better expressed in deeds than in words for it has no definition only existence. Good job. |
