YesAsia Editorial Description
Directed by Inudo Isshin (Kiiroi Namida, Touch), Bizan tells a universal story of familial love and emotional healing with lots of local flavor. Based on Sada Masashi's best-selling novel, Bizan is set in Tokushima, located in southern Japan, and the film draws heavily from its environment to create a unique narrative and visually striking cinematic experience. Other than a trip to the titular Mt. Bizan, the film also captures Tokushima's famous Awa Odori festival, a colorful dance festival held annually in August. Underlined by a remarkable score and beautiful photography, Bizan builds on subtle emotions and encounters to highlight the fragile mother-daughter relationship of the leads, effectively portrayed by Matsushima Nanako (Ring) and veteran actress Miyamoto Nobuko. The film also co-stars Osawa Takao (Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World) and Nagashima Toshiyuki.
When Kono Sakiko (Matsushima Nanako) learns that her mother (Miyamoto Nobuko) is sick, she returns to Tokushima to pay her a visit. Sakiko is shocked to hear from doctor Terasawa Daisuke (Osawa Takao) that her strong-spirited mother has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Perhaps even more surprising though is her mother's revelation that Sakiko's father, whom she had long believed dead, is in fact alive. Sakiko sets out in search for her father in hopes of bringing him to her mother, and the journey becomes one of revelation and reconciliation as she learns more about her parents and herself.

"Bizan" works wonderfully on so many levels! The film stars Matsushima Nanako as Kono Sakiko, a thirty-something woman caught up in her busy career with a Tokyo travel agency. Sakiko's life is interrupted when she receives a phone call informing her that her mother Ryuko (Miyamoto Nobuko) has been hospitalized. Although Sakiko's relationship with her mother has been frosty and distant, she rushes to her hometown of Tokushima to be by her Ryuko's side. There she learns that Ryuko has terminal cancer and has only a few months left to live. The return to Tokushima and her proximity to Ryuko forces Sakiko to reflect upon her relationship with her mother. Raised without a father, Sakiko felt her mother was cold, brusque and unloving toward her. However, when her mother's friend gives Sakiko a box filled with love letters from her father to her mother, Sakiko begins to gain a new perspective on her mother. Sakiko had been told that her father had died, but she learns that he still is alive and working as a doctor in Tokyo. Sakiko goes back to visit him only to find herself tongue-tied in his presence. Sakiko returns to Tokushima to take her mother one last time to see the city's great Awa Odori festival. There the film's events reach a culmination through which we gain a new understanding of how an unmarried mother has shown her undying love for her daughter. Matsushima Nanako does a fine job depicting a daughter struggling to come to terms with her no-nonsense mother and Miyamoto Nobuko (familiar to Western audiences for her roles in her late husband Itami Juzo's great films) practically steals the show as Sakiko's dying mother. Ms. Miyamoto is a pint-sized force of nature in this film. "Bizan" also serves as a beautiful postcard for the southern city of Tokushima; it certainly made me want to visit that lovely place! "Bizan" is a gem and it will leave you with grateful tears in your eyes. |
