East Meets West...

In my continuing exploration for delightful (and often unique...) music, it's always a treat to come across an unexpected jewel. That is definitely what this CD is. Truly, an artist I'd never heard of or even heard anything about...it was a risk to purchase. But a risk well worth the taking and one I highly recommend to a well-defined fan-base (this artist is exquisite...but far from the usual Canto-Pop fare that is produced for the masses...instead, her music is daringly geared toward a perhaps smaller niché of listeners...). And what is that fan-base someone might ask? I think the best comparision for both the vocals and music content on this release is as my title states: some East and some West. There is a definite sound of acoustic guitar folk/alternative pop of Heather Nova (best demonstrated on her CD "Red Bird"); sound of lilting light coffee-house sensitive mood pop of Zhou Xun (best demonstrated on her CD "Ou Yu"); sound of subtle lounge/chill-out strumming pop of Norah Jones (best demonstrated on her CD "Feels Like Home"). So, put those all together and meet this artist... Or, that is the best I can do to offer in the way of comparisions based on my own listening observations. My only disliked track on here is track 3 (it's not really the most in keeping with the others...) and my absolute favorite is "Day" (it's solid and shows off the best strong vocals). "Day" alone is almost reason enough to purchase this item... Track 1 is quite mesmerizing and excellent as well (as far as being my favorites). Normally, I like to go track by track on a CD with my song "detailing", but this artist is so incredibly consistant in her own genre and style, that if I were to do that...well, it might get boring. Not that the music is at all boring...just my descriptions might be. And I could not do them justice anyway. Perhaps because so much of this release's content is simply just an undefinable and unexplainable sense of enjoyment. |
