YesAsia Editorial Description
Janne Da Arc vocalist yasu's side project band Acid Black Cherry has been getting main stage attention, and it's not hard to see why. With a rotating band line-up that includes names like Sugizo of LUNA SEA, La'Chryma Christi's SHUSE, PENICILLIN's Chisato, and Aucifer's YUKI, Acid Black Cherry had the J-rock world buzzing in 2007. Acid Black Cherry's highly anticipated album, Black List, arrives in rocking style in February, and the band will be touring around Japan from March to May, ending with a date at the Budokan on May 23. The band's first full-length comes with 12 tracks including their earlier singles like Black Cherry and SPELL MAGIC, which debuted at #4 on the Oricon charts last year.

Rock 'n Roll indeed

I'm honestly surprised that there are no reviews for any of Yasu's stuff yet. [Reviews Note: I havent gotten the english translation for these songs, this review is about the MUSIC, not the lyrics] Black List... for a debut album, I see no flaws (for a man who succeeded in music before, what else could you expect?). As a whole, this CD rocked me to no end. I had to listen to each track all the way through, twice... then play Murder License again (haha) Sins, track one. The guitar in the beginning sounds like an over used rhythm in many rock songs. Then the guitar disappears as a synthesizer and keyboard intertwine together for a truly original, eerie sound. Yasu's voice switches back and forth from being muffled on the verses back to normal on the chorus. He confirms his sins and challenges Jesus.. I don't want to say a "typical" rock song, it is very good, I just dont appreciate the lyrics very much (like many rock songs) Shoujo no Inori is a fast pace, confusing track. The speed of it reminds me of a pop song, and the chorus sounds like something you would find in a racing video game (or anime). The beginning sounds like a controlled mess before the electric guitars appear, with a pattern of a short scale climbs up or down, the last note hanging with a screech, very cool. At the end of the song a synth sounds that reminds me of the beat in Sins. SPELL MAGIC! Oh please guys, go read my review for that single... I'm so not reposting that long thing. Talk about a song. Scars makes you want to think about the past, and stay there. The beat reminds me of the B-side for SPELL MAGIC. Scars could defiantly be considered a rock ballad, it's very nice. With instruments that work with it, I hear a xylophone, keyboard, bass guitar.. either a cello or a violin... Both I think. Of course the electric guitar. A sooth addition to Black List. Aishitenai... man I love this song. It's so touching, so sad too. Yasu truely is a romantic, even his natural voice sounds so full of real emotion. Aishitenai (I Don't Love You) explains the feelings of a man (perhaps Yasu), I want to say a "tough" man, who's not used to showing his feelings, when he meets the love that shows him how. "I'm not crying... I'm doing it quietly... Ahh... It's already no good... I love you... I can't say good bye..." Perhaps my favorite line's in the whole piece ^_^ The instruments complete the feel of love here, makes me sway... Bit Stupid... the only song on the album I didn't like. It sounds too much like bubble gum pop to me (:P) I wish I knew the lyrics to this... maybe it's a parody (I wish) But from the rhythm (and the quick english words) it sounds like another love song. I think i hear a trumpet in this song... and a recorder... a bit techno... yes, this is really for a Kirby video game. Rakuen!! My second favorite song in Black List. Any song that makes me knock my head everywhere is a song for me. I hear an acoustic guitar strings with a synth keyboard together, sounds so cool. The guitars and heavy drums blend together to form a dark, novel sound. More synth, Im sure every song has it. When Black Cherry starts out, it's a very nice, jazzy number. Reminds me of something you would here in an old bar (like in the movies) Yasu ends on a note, and suddenly the electric guitar, quite literaly, invades and takes over the whole feel of quiet, homey jazz. Though after awhile of electric madness, the trumpets pop up again, and it's so much like a Swing dance song. I've never heard anything like it. The guitar solo at the bridge is something envy. "Black Cherry, motto" The lyrics are questionable, but initially is a pent up... "fling" Murder License... ah, the easiest best track on Black List. The sound i hear in the beginning... I want to say it's a synth. Whatever it is, it gives the song more definition and a techno-rock feel (though this track is far from techno). The heavy electric guitar explains what "Rock" truly is. The constant line "break down!" really does add dramatic effect to the song (is that possible?) God, i love this track. Listen to it first if you are willing to get it. Fuyu no Maboroshi... anyone see the PV for that? (lol) another Rock Ballad, the drums are hit slowly, emphasizing sadness and a sluggish move. As if giving up on something. It is kinda sad, a love has died, Yasu wonders if miracle could happen, if he could see her again. DRAGON CARNIVAL... reminds me of a song to go with Full Metal Alchemist. (haha) very bouncy, but not poppy (God no) like a happy song after the battle, cheers one up to an extent. The melody is a keyboard in a distant back ground of electric guitars (in the chorus) very nice, good to listen to on a car ride. Prologue End starts out with a nice, sad piano melody that carries out throughout the song. With a violin that threatens to break out every now and then. then a hit of drums and electric guitars, the piano still going strong. The rock instruments are used to emphasis a point (which i don't know... cant understand enough Japanese) Near the end the piano has a long solo. A perfect end to Black List I'm gunna go listen to it again. :) |
