Don't get the dubbed (Artisan) version!
Granted this is not a good film by any stratch of imagination, but some parts of it are still enjoyable (in a guilty pleasure way). This version is cut to avoid a CAT III rating (because of the gore) so parts of it don't make sense; still I enjoy it because 1). the action (some people complained about the editing but as a trained martial artist some of the action is actually pretty cool) 2). it's stylish 3). Francoise Yip is hot 4). Lau Ching Wan and Karen Mok are great. If you watched the dubbed (Artisan version) and have some spare change, at least rent it and see the difference. |

Li Lien Jie, I hope i spelled it correctly, was good with Lau Ching Wan. I wish they had done another to this. I hope one day they will work again, together. |

Poor Version!
I'm very disapointed with the fact that the dubbing was poor in some places and that this version is actually CUT!!! It's not the version I saw round my friend's house, if I'd know this from the start I wouldn't have bought this DVD from HK! |

Black Mask - Not the Best
I bought this film only recently, (region 4 version). Sorry to all Jet Li fans but whilst the action sequences were enjoyable, the appalling dubbing drops this film into the dirt. Why? For God's sake why? Karen Mok speaks flawless english and surely there are enough Cantonese or expat' caucasians that could've been hired in to do the voices for any actor that couldn't speak english. What's on the track is simply shocking, far from Tsui Harks best work and simply doesn't do justice to Karen nor to her co-stars. I can't even bring myself to watch this film again, at least not the R4 version. |

Greatest Superhero Movie Ever!!!
When I watched it for the first time, it was great! The action scenes were perfect, the story was compelling, and the music was very cool, too. Other than the less-than-stellar film quality, Black Mask has it all! Later on, i felt like checking out the US DVD, and although the quality of the picture was better, the rest could not compare. the dubbing wasn''t that great (as dubbing usually sucks), the rap music didn''t seem to fit, and it seemed to be missing certain scenes that i watched in the VCD. SO after being disappointed by the US version, i sold it on ebay, and purchased this HK DVD version. My impression of it? It''s the same exact thing as the VCD, but with slightly better quality picture (same dark tones, but not pixelated at all), 1 disc (the VCD was 2), the sound was better (my dvd player only played the mandarin speech for the VCD, but for the DVD, i could listen to the original cantonese).. and that''s pretty much it. DEFINITELY WORTH BUYING!!! Don''t pass it up. :D |
